Be careful in the West Rand! (and SA in general!)

There was a thread on this not too long ago on how we can make the roads safer.  My one argument is that people will not learn if there are not consequences for their actions.

And how do we do this?  Because there is not enough "government" structures for this, which mean you are reliant on society to govern themselves (as they have done for smoking in buildings), but when you bring in the characters already mentioned above people are scared to approach the mommy in the car, the double cab dude, the taxi driver, etc. thus a next generation in the backseat learns that it is acceptable behaviour.

How many will at the braai fires, or the kitchen tea call out a friend for being an ID10t on the road?

Think this has been discussed both sides (basically there are a$$holes on both sides but the rider will always loose in the event of a clash on the road)

So what do we do to slow down the continual breakdown of the social "contract" ?  How do we initiate a change (no matter how small), or suggestions on how to affect a change those in our circle of influence. Or do we just give up and continue to bitch and moan about it as it continue to breakdown further?

I don't have an answer just curious because I doubt that ALL of us be frank and harsh with work colleagues / friends that was pointed out as acting like a$$holes on the road.

Edit: It is not like we have been able as a society deal with abuse (woman / men / children), or drunkenness, using phones while driving, etc

Change what you can, and thats your own behaviour.

Each time you go out on the roads, you can either add to or take from the median behaviour.

Dont be a taker.

We didnt get like this overnight, not will it be corrected overnight.

Perhaps liken it to that asteroid avoidance technique, whereby you park a small object near a big object in space. Over time, you will slowly change the bigger objects trajectory by applying a very small but constant force. The more smaller constant forces you apply the faster the change in direction.

That is my view also, I only have control over my own actions, and if I can be a strong example (ie not just come across as weakly giving in to all around me) of what it means to be a considerate driver / cyclist / road user hopefully it will be an example / influence the mind set of those that see me.

PS one more post to go and then I can go bos with buy /selling without consequences on the HUB as well as say what every pops into my mind...

Said it before, positive reinforcement will succeed where negative reinforcement doesn't. So an extended thumb works better than a middle finger....

They both work extremely well, but the results are opposite.

Here in Bavaria also every now and then get someone who expresses his disconcent to cyclist by using the hooter.  People here actually just ignore them.  I wave and smile like it is a good buddy of mine.  The absolute confusion you see afterwards on the motorits face is priceless.

OP Go and ask this Question :-)

Morning everyone, just want to know....what does the road rules say wrt using your cellphone while driving. I hooted at this person texting and driving, and was nearly run of the road"

See what they say.......Seems motorist knows ONLY the side by side road rule and NO OTHER road rules

Edit:

Then when you have the comments, "they don't pay license"

1 . When the govemerment canceled bicycle licenses, they did not say "and now you can no longer use the road. Infact cyclist are not allowed to be on pavement.

2. What about the runners, running 3-4 side by side IN the road, they don't have a license and they are breaking the law(Running should be on pavement)

I really hope the peope commenters on that FB page dont breed.

I say there should be breeding licenses, but that is a WHOLE different debate........

If there is one trait that binds us as SAFFAS, black, while, coloured, whatwhat, it is aggression generally, and road aggression, in particular.  Sorry to say.  It oozes out in all its glorious splendour, in all its variants and flavours.  White Afrikaans bakkie drivers (well represented in the thread above), WASP housewives in SUVs in Sandton, new rich blacks in AMGs, Indians in GTIs - the whole goddamn lot of us are so quick to hair trigger responses, its a disgrace.  Our road deaths speak for themselves.  It sometimes feels like we are a nation at war with ourselves.

Now I'm depressed.  Sorry.

the 3 others were middle aged guys in bakkies driving aggressively.

*flamesuit on*

I always find the doublecab dudes to be the most aggressive. I have no idea why but its the sad reality.

Seems like cyclists are arrogant, sweaty (!), in debt (thanks to the bike) and should be paying licences...I suppose once we pay a licence then the mindset out there will change and we will all be openly embraced and be safe once again because luckily aside from cyclists there are no other dangers and hazzards out there on the road??!! (Has to be true seeing how we have one of the lowest road accident rates in the entire universe!)
