Foam Rolling

Over the last few weeks i have been foam rolling more and more often.

I must say i'm loving it!

It is painful at the time, the faces i pull are pretty epic.

but the feeling afterwards is definitely worth it

i'm only really doing my legs and back, usually after a indoor session.

anyone else foam rolling? - and if so do you have any pointers for a noob?

Keep doing it.  It works, and the pros do it too.  Just don't "overdo" it as you can end up bruising the muscle.

I do quads, calves, glutes and ITB.

you are hardcore.

I can't get close to my ITB with the foam roller

Works wonders but you should chat with a pilates instructor for tips and tricks and what not-to-do in order to avoid injury. I can highly recommend my wife's studio in JHB (Bryanston) as she specialises in cycling and running athletes.

Keep at it with the ITB - you'll get there and then it's far less painful after each exercise.

There is something wrong with you people who roll your ITBs!

You belong in a padded cell talking about shallow and deep rolling pidgeons with Dr Lecter.

....says the man who's profile pic is an attempted ITB stretch.....#closeted!

First time I used the roller my wife came running to see what all the screaming was about... only to point and laugh.

I don't use mine nearly enough. Just no time these days.

As part of my rehab I've had to roll my ITB just about every day and use a Slaz ball on my glutes. It definitely helps keep the muscles loose but in the beginning it was pain city everyday.

It's a great habit to keep if you can

pretty certain the first time i did my ITB's i went blind...

now with constant rolling it has gotten a lot better

Maybe chat to a physio regarding rolling out your back.  There's a right and wrong way to roll out muscles.  I have heard some people saying that you should not foam roll your back because if you do it wrong you could cause more damage than doing good.  But I'm not an expert and that's just what I've heard from some people.

I do foam roll my legs very often and sometimes I use the cake roller for the inside of my quads. No fun at all!!

I'd definitely second that.  I used the roller on my back in December last year - it made a very loud click sort of noise and I went from mild stiffness (I'd had a little OTB) to proper pain.  Couldn't sit or lie down and definitely couldn't sleep.  It still causes problems and pain today six months and two days later...

Foam rollers can be great, but they can also be really bad if you use them wrong.
