Ride snacks - real food

Hey Hubland,

So in my quest not to fall over at the side of the road somewhere along a ride I have decided to experiment more with ride snacks.

There is nothing worse than bonking and you still have a looong way to go home, pride stops you from phoning the missus to tell her about multiple ficticious punctures (or you forgot your phone).

If contributions could be made in respect of real food would be awesome,

The Gels, goos, and magnificent energy farthest bar evers etc will not find a place in my jersey pockets,

Why, cos they taste crap, some of the bars take 40 mins to eat and give you a sore jaw,

Oh yes did i mention they taste crap?

Nor am i partial to the massive amount of liquid potions that fill water bottles, if you get hungry these liquids dont hit the spot.

Just have water.

So have eaten nuts and raisins on my last ride (pretty good) maybe a bit boring, someone told me nuts are not so great for this purpose?

I hear biltong is quite popular (cant quite put cycling and biltong together somehow)

Im thinking, chicken mayo sandwich on woolies seed loaf for next ride.

What say you guys, any ideas, gotta mix it up after all.

I buy plain cooked rice from the local Thai takeaway.

Mix with

1 scrambled egg

1 tbsp peanut butter

1 tbsp honey

Finely chopped crispy bacon (± 2tbsp)

Place I'm ziploc baggies and Bob's your uncle

That plus plain good old windpomp sherry, a banana and some trail mix gets me through some long rides

So Fanie, you cant be eating that while riding then, you have to stop, need a spoon etc I assume, cant use a tyre lever?

Reach for back pocket, take out baggie, open and squeeze contents into mouth, chew and swallow.

The Thai rice makes everything stick together.

Got the recipe (adapted) from time crunched cyclist.

Similar to the rice cakes the pro's eat.

Ok no tyre lever spoon, but bacon, egg, rice and peanut butter, doesnt sound delicious at all.

Maybe lying at the side of the road is preferable LOL.

Double shot of espresso mixed with half a tin of condensed milk. Tastes like old style spoorwee koffie and is as cheap as chips. Carbs, caffeine, protein and even some fats. Works a treat.

its even in biodegradeable packing

Sure bandannas are cool, but am a bit over them now, think most people are bandannad out as ride snack.

Sorry chaps, should have mentioned, Im not a racing snake,

Dont use asthma pumps etc.

So having a tasty snack makes the ride more enjoyable is all.

Of all the food on the planet, to be limited to bananas or things cooked in the laboratory seems a bit silly.

I read a book where these cyclists in Belgium are partial to fried egg on a sandwich for their ride snack.

Think i may try that too !

ok so then you need to change your post to " where is a really good cyclist friendly cafe close to/far from me that serves really good coffee and yummy real food mid ride lunch options?"

then you wont get offered a banana
