Ride snacks - real food

That’s why most cyclists are fat. Burn 1000cals eat 2000 because “I deserve it”.

Watch MTB races on TV, how many of the guys standing at the feeding (water) points shoveling potato’s should be doing. Less of that and pedaling a bit more.

This is true, lots of dudes tuck into monster breakfasts after a ride, defeats the object of trying to improve the state of the spare tyre.

There is the other extreme too, was watching some TDF the other night, some of these okes are seriously thin, couple of them look like skeletons in helmets and shoes.

They must burn monster calories.

I use a cup of future life...add a tablespoon of peanut butter and ten finely chopped dates. Add just enough hot water to bring together and roll in a bitesized ball. Dust with icing sugar and leave in sealed container in fridge .Take three of these with on a ride in a small sandwich bag. So cheap and they work.

I've also tried all kinds of snacks, but many times they turn out to be more of a hassle than anything else and since you dont need a tray of muffins or a farmhouse breakfast when out on a training ride I moved back to basic snacks.

On shorter rides I'll take a couple of dates along with a bottle of water. On longer rides one bottle of water, one bottle of carb mix and a protein bar for each hour on the bike along with dates to munch on inbetween.

This boils down to personal preference but its a bike ride, not a week in the jungle, you don't need a grocery bag of food....[emoji848]

think I'll be trying this soon , when are dates in season tho ?

End of the South African summer. Not sure how long they keep them in cold storage. I get mine from a friend who travels from Upinton to Joberg couple of times a year. If you google Kalahari medjool dates, you will get a link to Karsten farms. Drop them a call or a mail and they should provide you with details regarding when and where it should be available. Those medjool dates are large, plum, soft and the taste are out of this world! They seem to stay fresh in the freezer for very long.

After probably 30 years of cycling, Yesterday, for the umteenth time I learned the value of nutrition and hydration on the bike. Went for a 130km mtb ride armed with a bottle of water. Thats it.

Started getting hungry at about 60km. Then I ran out of water at 90km. From then I started brighting and dimming for the last 40 km.

I finished the ride but felt *** for the rest of the day.

Nutrition and hydration is very important. I always try to prove that it isnt but it is.

Also ride with only one bottle, but that’s because it’s all I can fit on my bike. I usually just plan my route to later fill up from one of the mountain streams.

I can also fill up from a stream here.

A sewage stream flowing out of a manhole.

Cocoa and Coconut Bar from Checkers.

Decent ingredients, tasty, and packed with energy. Just don't stockpile as they tend to get rock hard
