Hi bought a bike few weeks ago 2nd hand.

On the first ride at about 8km as I went into first gear the drop out broke.

Can it be repaired or replaced or do I need a other frame?

Trek 1.5 H2 aluminium

My drop out knowledge is normally limited to dropping out of varsity.. but. Ja visit your LBS. That rear derailleur hanger can be replaced.

Ok cool I'm in cape town any recommendations where I could take it too and maybe a price more or less

Depends where in CT you stay, any bike shop should be able to sort you out. If you in the Southern Suburbs I'd recommend Bridge Cycles.

Cost of a hanger depends on the frame as all hangers are different. Cost can be anywhere from R250-R600.

Remember to take the broken hanger with you to make things easier in finding a replacement.

That looks like part of the frame, not just the drop out.

If it's just the drop out, Bridge Cycle carries a wide range or can order

I thought exactly the same - looks like part of the frame!

You need someone who can do aluminium welding.

Give it a while and someone here om thehub will come up with a ali welder in Cape Town.

Can be done.

I have a friend in Gansbaai that does that kind of repair for himself

Yip, I see now, looks like part of the frame that came off.

Trek frames have life time warranties...

If it is part of the frame and cannot be replaced (I think it is the case), contact Trek and ask them for maybe a "goodwill warranty" claim or something. As you are not the first owner they have no obligation to honer it, but just maybe out of goodwill they will accommodate you, even if it is with a new frame at a discount price perhaps.

That looks a lot more terminal than just a hanger.

I'd take the whole bike and the part to a bike shop for a check. But, it looks like the frame is history.

It'll be cheaper to replace the frame than have it welded and still buy a hanger. There are plenty of good, used frames for sale at under R1 000

That part would be fairly easy to repair as it is not tubing but solid aliminium.

Would not be expensive.

So no the frame is far from toast.
