I've only been to Cyclelab Fourways and almost needless to say I walked out without purchasing anything I wanted besides some generic priced cycling shorts.

If CWC prices are now going "down" (Wednesday is opposite day after all) to Cyclelab levels, it means I'll be back to 100% online imports.

Only time will tell Cyclelab's true motive for acquiring CWC.

But the rumour has been going around for a while.

I’m quite sure that there are clauses in the deal ensuring that the current management stays on for a set period, as well as GP and EBIT targets that must be achieved. There is also in all likelihood an equity and a cash component as well as restraints of trade once the transition period expires.

Strategic acquisitions is what growth is about. More sales footprint should equals more customers which equals more money.

This is terrible from a free market viewpoint. I guess CycleLab can't be charged for pricefixing if they own the market?

What would be more worrying to me if I was CycleLab, is the sentiment from loyal customers/supporters of CWC.

I had it on good authority that Cycle Lab was on the brink of opening a big store in the Western Cape and thought that the healthy competition between them and CWC would benefit us consumers.

 

But now.....

Can't say I love this either - and where the hell did CL get the money? 

 

I reckon there is a private equity play going on here to consolidate 2 of the biggest players in the market.  If this is right, and the PE guys have done their homework, they will get rid of the entire CL management team and install the CW team - whoever gets retail merchandising and inventory management as consistently wrong as those CL okes should have been fired a long time ago.

As a bricks and mortar store they certainly were NOT on par with the other shops in the area !

 

 

O-well, apparently a big sale for the next few weeks .... sounds like business as usual .... lets see if prices actually comes down now, or if this is just another "let's adjust the RRP sale" ...
