Scott Spark 940 .... or what else ?

wants vs needs ... gat jeuk .... and all that ....  :whistling:

Handling - for my use the EX5 outperforms my skills by far.

Great. Carry on developing those skills with brilliant bike

Gearing - I already did a 1x12 Eagle GX conversion .... though I DO enjoy the ease of use of a 1x, 5% of the time I wish for a wider range ..... I had to select for bottom end due to my knees, which means I spin out, though that is never an issue on a trail.  A 2x may be more practical for me, even though I will miss the 1x .... NOT as if this is any reason to go from the EX5 to the 940, since the 940 is also a 1x Eagle GX setup.

So.... yeah, nothing in it. Go for a 30t on the Trek. I promise you, it is worth it. I spun out on my 32-11 at 45kph this past weekend. minus 9% - yeah, so 41kp on a 30t. On a niner (which yours is, right?) that's 5% or so higher. So 43kph or so spinning out. That's fast enough, yeah? Bloody right, it is

Brakes - perfect for my use

So... no difference.

Suspension - the remote lockout will certainly be an advantage.

Tsek. It's not. I know how it clutters up the bars, and trust me - it fkn clutters em; and then now all you have is a flick of the finger (unless you have the normal non lockout shock the Monarch R, in which case an upgrade is bloody cheap) and if you don't have that, a new shock is cheap (relatively speaking)

Dropper seat post - nice extra on the 940 .... I dont have experience with this, so cant say much more about it ....

Lyne. The end.

Bike-fit ..... I am on that cut-off between M and L size, depending on the brand ..... turns out the EX5 I bought is slightly on the small side (perks of a professional bike fit showing up these things..)

AH, now THERE is a proper reason to change. In that case, change away. The Scott is a fecking nice bike and will serve you well.

so why ????

I have often sold toys after 12 to 18 months to buy the next model

FAKE NEWS. See Above. FAKE NEWS

So why?

See red italic bold underlined text.

All the rest is inconsequential. It's too small. That's why. What bike you replace it with is the question. The Scott, being a great bike, is a contender for sure. But don't decide it on remote lockout. That's a nice to have. Choose it on feel. That scott tho, phwoaaaaarrrrrr.

The Scott remote lock-out feature rocks! Yes the bars look a like birds nest (6 cables on a 1x!), but if you want something sleek - buy a road bike  :P

Had the Fuel EX now have a Spark 940. Even without the special deal the spec on the Spark destroys the Fuel EX 5. Drivetrain, suspension, brakes and nicer finishing touches. Also consider that if you are around 170cm tall that Trek don't import the 18.5” frame which is the correct size for someone that big. 17.5” is too small, ask me how I know. My Trek also developed some nasty clicking noises which I could not diagnose and which seem to be a rather common occurrence from looking at the MTBR forums. So for me the Scott wins hands down, but despite the issues the Fuel EX is still a properly fun bike to ride

I am 1,76m .... so you KNOW where I am at now !

I do believe the EX5 is a GOOD bike !  I ENJOY it !  But sadly I did not know any better at the time, and actually thought a TREK dealership would make sure I was sold the correct size bike .... lesson learnt ....

At least a somebody 4cm shorter than me is about to buy a year old TREK, with new rims and a new Eagle GX drive train ...

Those few cm means we cant get the saddle back far enough, and my knees are too far forward over the crank and thus I cant use the full pedal stroke ... or something like that ...

Thanks

I want to try and get a demo bike in my size .... want to "feel" what that difference is on the correct size bike.  As THIS is the ultimately the only real difference ....

PS - I actually LIKE the uncluttered look of the bar with the x1 setup .... cant say that too loudly now though ...

Be careful.with that assumption. In stock form my GX Eagle 1×12 had a wider range than my Shimano 2x10 also in stock form. Only after I fitted a Praxis wide range cassette to the latter do they both now have almost exactly the same range.

VERY true !

All too often the two front gears are too close too each other, resulting in a narrow range ...

A repeat from another thread:

OK so here is a spanner in the works, components are are very entry level and I believe the Merida is better value.

Secondhand was way better components and apparently much better bang for you buck, but all the good deals fly. Also you do not know how much ware and tear the components have. Especially if you go 1 x .

So here is what I did:

1. found a new Ali hard tail with top of the range components (I got a Momson ali hardtail with XTR.

2. I am going to bring in a chinese dulal susser frame (cheap as chips, I think you could get away with R 6 to 8K)

3. Get a recon shock for about 3k

Then for about R 35k you get s propper dual susser with the top end components. If you were to try and buy this as a bike in a competing weight class it would be in the R 100k range.

Well that is what my plan is and what I have done. Still need to get the frame but have the bike so long.

Think about it?

On a different not why is it so expensive to upgrade to a crown lockout from a remote lockout. Remote lockouts are really a waste of space and are so frustrating.

Listen to Myles. And if you're still unsure, listen to Myles.

My take... save your money, and use it on a lekker holiday with your bike.

That said, if that new bike's going to get your juices going and riding even when you won't want to, then get the new bike.

A good friend of mine has a Scott Spark 950 2017 Model which cost him 35k+ brand new.

It's a wonderful bike to ride good Suspension but I feel that for the price it was not good value for money and this is why.

The Headset is very basic it still has the loose bearings in a cage and takes in a lot of water and mud and requires servicing often to keep it clean.

The front and back hubs are the Basic cup and cone with a cage on one side and loose balls on the other side. Also require servicing often.

The Drive train is a basic cheap 2X10 with the normal hg50 11-36 and 22-36 in front the XT derailleur does not have a clutch. The chain wore out @ 1800 Kays even though the rider lubes after every ride.

The bike has a squeak that nobody can fix, I now suspect that it is coming from inside the dropper post.

The Suspension 3 position Lever does not fully lockout the suspension it is Soft Medium and Hard as opposed to Lockout.

The saddle is an el cheapo model.

Most of the components on the bike except for the suspension can be found on a 10K hard tail.

I just feel that the Sparc is a well designed bike Geometry wise but the components (except for the Fork and Shock) are low spec for such a pricey bike. And due to this they are not very good value for money bikes, specially if bought at full price.

Mostly true for the lower end models. You get better value for money in that price range from Giant, Merida and Silverback

A 940 at 14k off its list price is a smoking deal. Yes a couple of components could do with upgrading (saddle is one). A 950 at the same price maybe not such a great deal. All I know is that I am loving the 940. Did 30km at Modderfontein and set a personal best without really pushing it. That makes me a happy camper.

Regarding the dropper, it looks exactly the same as the Lyne components one. Super easy to service (check the Lyne site for a great video). I’ll take a cheaper easy to service dropper as well. The Reverb on my last bike had to be sent away for that
