Scott Spark 940 .... or what else ?

Recommended Posts

I think that guy was being lazy or something, forekaster. I have the 930 with forkastesr on, there are over 1000km on the forekaster on my Scott scale.

The sidewalls I have heard are more prone to rock tears than other thicker tyres, but of all the people I know riding them I am yet to hear complaints about leakage.

I have them on my last bike as a recommendation from Andrew Neethling, the Scott team MTB racer who is Co owner of my LBS with his brother who is a former Cape epic mechanic. With that level of experience under 1 roof, I find it hard to doubt there advice. So ya sure my personal experience is not infinite and maybe in some cases or with certain defective varient a that problem may exist, but if it were a common problem of the forekaster I don't imagine an MTB racer would recommend one.

Only trouble I have with them is seating them on the rim, they not fans of an air tank, they want a compressor, or maybe I need a bigger tank.

If you ride rocky, more aggressive trails, you probably want to look into more reinforced tyres, otherwise with some rim tape and good sealant your golden.

Most common sealant is stans, which works, but I have read from many users on year that it's not co2 friendly, so if you bomb a stans tyre it's highly advisable to replace the sealent as soon as possible.

I use enduro seal, which I order through a friend what's its feelings are towards co2 I don't know, have been lucky enough to have not had to bomb a tyre in some time.

Jeez, Remi - give Jonty a LITTLE more credit. He's a former UCI World Cup DH mechanic. Sheesh... :P

Never knew, didn't google the guy, I think the 8 time epic mechanic was in a newsletter or their about page. It may have said more, but that was a point that stuck.

Either way, he fixed very abused bikes and helped the best of the best win. I'm just glad they opened up a shop in my kneck of the woods, I have spent what some may say may call way too much money, on bikes thanks to that man and I don't regret a single cent of it.

There is something to be said about having a coffee shop, in a bike shop at the end of an awesome trail, had it not been for that I probably would not have 2 bikes hanging on my wall right now.

Got my Scale 960 after walking in for coffee after a group run on the farm and I think 10 months later I took my fussy tyre in to be seated and that's when he peaked my interest in the Spark 930.

The workmanship in that place is top notch, they have more than earned my lifetime loyalty.

I think that the paintjob for 2018 is much nicer than the 2019 one, BUT maybe it will still get used to it.

In 2016 I think, they went with the matt paint job as well and there was a problem with the paint, it worse off very quickly, friend is getting his 3rd replacement frame on monday.

Hopefully that's not the issue with this one.

Feedback of a different nature -

The TREK Fuel EX 5 is in the classifieds - Please contact Jaco Sadie - https://www.bikehub.co.za/user/80161-jaco-sadie/

The new rims and SRAM Eagle GX upgrade has maybe 1 000km on it.  GOOD news for the lucky new owner !   Absolutely perfect bike for somebody under 1,72m ....

The Eagle upgrade was done by Louise at Knipe_Racing, who also serviced the bike.

PS - there is a set of flat pedals, though not shown in the photos

BIG THANKS to Jaco that is taking care of the sale for me, due to my hectic travel schedule at work

would appreciate it if you could spread the word .... thanks

First impressions ....

First weekend of September I did three short rides with the Spark.  Tweaking the setup between rides.

Thursday I went to Irma for a proper bikefit of the Spark.  BEST idea ever !!  My setup tweaks were heading in the wrong direction ...

With the Spark setup PROPERLY, it was time for my epic journey up Dorstberg.

Climbing .... click the dual lockout to "traction", and the Spark glides over the terrain even those boulders up Dorstberg.  :w00t:   And still it does not bob at all, and maximum energy goes to the wheels.

Level sections .... well not too much of that at Meerendal  :whistling:   The odd contour line was dealt with quickly, and the Spark was begging for the next hill (more so than my legs)

Before long I was ontop of the world !

Short break for a few pics (and to catch my breath) ..... dropper post   dual lockout OPEN    time to ENJOY the downhill .....

Downhill .... those that have been to Dorstberg recently KNOWS just how bad the condition of the trail is at the top.  The Spark eats it up !!  With the seat out the way it is just SO easy to flick the bike around and to find the last usable bits of the trail.  And then the trail gets a bit better, and you can let rip a bit ....

I LOVE this bike !!

Interesting you say that, I have just finished undoing most of the tweaks done in my fit, all I am keeping is the cleat positing, but dropped the seat angle and saddle height back as after 2 months or so, still get serious lower back pain on long climbs that was not present before the fit.

So ya, I think I gave it enough time, who would have though half a degree on the saddle and 2mm ride on the bar would be that impactul, and negatively too.

HR had said my fit was pretty perfect, he was trying to improve my climbing, maybe I am climbing better, but I rather ride a tad slower than have excruciating back pain be the cost of speed. After all, it's meant to be fun.

interesting I have a 2016 Scale matt black/grey/green done quite a bit of riding and it still looks like new. Was sceptical about the matt cause I had a 2014 anthem adv and that looked great in the shop and never again.

As you rightly note - it is a matter of millimeters to a side ....

Initially I had lower back issues on the Scott (shop setup).... turns out I had the saddle about 7mm to high, causing my hips to rock just a bit.  Not enough for me to even notice it on the trail, but enough to cause lower back issues.  Thankfully Irma immediately spotted this, with the saddle at the correct hight, and then moved back for the correct knee-to-peddle position the fit WORKS.

The one item I am still evaluating .... The handlebars are a tad lower than before, putting a bit more weight on my wrists.  I understand why this is a "better riding position", but my wrists are not used to this just yet ....  Too early to say which way this is going ..... I may well get used to this, or the bars may get lifted for a more upright position (possible somewhere between previous and current..)

I really recommend you invest in some cycling specific shoes

Running shoes are precisely that...running shoes

They are meant to be flexible

Not very good for cycling

Will make all the difference I promise

He has the same one, and its not ridding scratches, the paint rubs off at the securing spots for the bike rack, the mounts on the top bar as well as the places where the bungie cord rubs. He just got his 3rd frame Monday and has had it dipped himself, voiding the warranty on his frame.

Are u still running the stop grips, as to call those worthless would be an insult to our local government. I had the same issue when I got my Scale 960, replaced with with ODI Rogues and all gone, when I got the spark I had them move my bars, stem and grips over.

Being an extreme techie, i googled and youtubed my initial bike fit for the Scale, watched dozens of videos and read dozens of posts and extracted the things they all agreed on, so my saddle height, knee angle and foot placement where all correct, the big adjustment was the cleat angle.

He raised my saddle angle back up to 0 and raised the saddle about 2mm, I got used to everything, but half was up a long/hard climb, that pain hey, dropping my saddle angle back to -1 helped quite a bit, and just need to test the saddle height but I suspect it should be fine.

He said it should take 3-5 rides to get used to things, if not I should make minor adjustments, I say after more than 2 months I am never gonna get used to it.
