suggestion

səˈdʒɛstʃ(ə)n/
noun

  1. 1.
an idea or plan put forward for consideration.
"here are some suggestions for tackling the problem"

edge 520 is only a suggestion.

an who said you need to spend thousands?

there are loads of cheaper or second hand options available as posted by others.

if accurate tracking is important you can also get a non-gps cycling computer to track distance, time and speed instead of a phone that doesn't want to work properly or track properly.

Is Strava's tracking really that bad? A few years ago when I still used Endomondo on my phone, with a basic non-gps computer on my handlebar, it was pretty good - battery life was the only concern.

If it works well enough for you, use it. Eventually, if and when you feel you need it, get a dedicated GPS.

in the OP's case strava is not really the issue, an unreliable phone/software is at fault

Before I get too facetious about this, I think phone apps works fine for casual cyclists who want to log their rides and yes buying a proper gps is not a trivial financial excercise.

But if you want to do it properly and log your rides reliably then you will never regret spending a few K on a proper GPS device, I used my first Garmin for more than 5 years before it had to be replaced and then was able to trade it in for a huge discount on the new one. So it is normally a once-off buy that saves you a lot of issues in the long run. It's worth every cent (I also feel the same way about proper bike racks)

I use Strava on my mobile phone (before the power saving setting became an issue). My other half uses a lezyne gps.

recordings of the two devices are similar

My phone's (Nokia 6.1) overzealous battery optimization settings are giving me headaches too.

My Lezyne Super GPS should connect with the app on the phone, for the live tracking feature and (far less importantly) notifications on the device - except that the app gets stopped in the background. Same with the Discovery Insure app. Think I've got the settings right now, we'll see.
