Should I still use this front tyre

I ride my tyres in a similar fashion to the way I wear underwear...  Go with it for one month and when it's crusty, turn it inside out and you're good for another month!  Then, after that (crusty both sides), just tear of the elastic band to wear and you're good for at least another month.  I know, I know!  It won't offer any real support or protection, but at least you'll look like you're wearing undies...

After turning a tyre inside out, I'd replace it though...  Riding with sidewalls only to give the appearance of having tyres will be harsh on the rims!

other day i was cleaning some dirt / dust from my road bike front tyre and noticed it was "suddenly" looking a bit threadbare.

JRA buddy, it can happen to anyone

I just had a brilliant idea... go buy a hosepipe and use it to replace the tire. Much cheaper and it would probably be the right size for a road bike rim.

You must be joking! That tyre should have been replaced a long time ago! It is not worth the risk for a couple of hundred ZAR.....

other day i was cleaning some dirt / dust from my road bike front tyre and noticed it was "suddenly" looking a bit threadbare. Considering some of the steep roads and sharp corners i sometimes ride on i as actually shocked to see it like this and that i had never noticed

Its a Continental GP Attack and i have no idea how many km's it has done or how long its been on.

Local LBS says normally a front tyre should last about 4000km

How much more do you think it will go before going pooof?

Def ready for a hub classified sale - just copy 'n paste the sale blurb I drafted for you:

"cured (old school method) conti attack, lotsa life in it, was my racing set - just raced once or twice. Prefer collection (see location - no time wasters pls), pls no callme or sms, whatsapp only. Slightly neg"

Dont forget to mention you work on an oil rig, as this is something that potential buyers see as a trustworthy employer and this will give you extra leeway during price negotiations.

Hang on...  I know this oil rig thing is funny and even I joke around about it... But I did just realise that one of my university classmates' dad did actually work on an oil rig!  In Nigeria of all places...  And he was fond of classifieds and sent both his sons (and even a few times his wife) to conclude transactions and/or pick up goods while he was out of country!

Bin it, that carcass can blow or puncture very quickly when so worn ..... and that is the last thing you want happening to a front wheel / tyre .... on the rear you stand a better chance of survival, but the front not so much.

Nothing obviously wrong with that tyre, but I do worry about how you clean your bike!!

Why?

I use a calendar and the hp hose at my local car wash.

Keep it simple I say

A bit of "Sole saver" (used for shoes) applied with an ice-cream stick and you should be good to go

Aaahhh the good old days of Shoe Patched tyres eh QB ;-)
