Scott Spark 900 - opinion

Thanks the bob... its weird. I went for a little blip on the pump track but the bike was straight off the floor and shocks were somewhat "soft" - the seat wasn't in a great position and all in all felt meh. When I popped past for final decision time, the sales man (whose been great) pumped tyres, pumped shocks and in general put some effort into what the set up may be. WOW - difference..

Glad to hear that your thrilled with the dual remote shock lock.. was considering going for a lower model that doesn't have that. Kinda felt that I have never had it so wouldn't miss it if I still don't have it but, I do need all the help I can get and im hearing very good things about how it assists the rider.

Im not to sure about the rebound. Im quite a big lad at 100Kgs so would expect quite a stiff front fork, but will chat to the fitment guy.  Strangely intriguing how much of a difference it all makes. A correctly fitted and set up makes a huge difference.

Thanks again for all opinions folk

The manual should have some guidelines for starting pressures and rebound. Your bike shop should be able to set it up and get it pretty close! Enjoy the bike!

Looks like the Rockshox and X-Fusion combo, so I'm thinking it is a 960

Ah, cool... Just can't find that colour combo (the frame) online...

Almost seems like a mix of 930 frame and other suspension?

I have only heard great things about the new Spark I would personally just go for a 940 or higher model then you know the suspension is good I don't like the 960 and 970 front shock very skinny think 30mm steel stantions vs the 34mm aluminium on the 940 and higher up models.

But this is just a personal thing not to say the entry ones won't be fun to ride.

those entry level Scott Spark's  ar enot fun to ride. The bikes are heavy, like 15ish kgand the suspension isn't very good. Rather get a hardtail for the same money with better suspension

This is a very interesting spec spark.

Defiantly not a 930 frame, as the 930 is where the carbon specked frames start, and this one is an alu frame. Also the decals on the down tube are slightly different.

Brakes look like the Shimano MT-200 (from the reservoir) which is found on the 960/970 end of the range, as is the suspension platform.

The 900 elite doesn't return and search hits either.

Found this on another forum regarding the 2019 Scott line up:

I'm on a RC 900 Pro. I'm not buying a new bike for the next 10 years, that's how much I love this bike!

To put it in context, last year I bought 3 bikes, rode them a few months and sold them. Just couldn't get comfortable on any of them. But I guess I found "the one" in this bike at last.

The geometry on your bike will be more or less the same. You'll have more travel and a dropper post.. That's a bonus if you want to play a bit more!

The geometry is great and the frame is stiff. The bike feels at home on any terrain. Climbing, going down, singletracks and trails all feel awesome on this bike. With the lockout I even do long gravel grinding rides with no issues of pedal bobbing.

Someone here said the saddle is uncomfortable. I experienced the opposite. Had a Selle Italia on my previous bike, and I actually prefer the syncros saddle on the Spark. In fact, I'm looking for a syncros saddle to replace my fabric saddle on my roadbike. So if you swop saddles, I'll be happy to take your Syncos saddle off your hands hehe.

Regarding the 1x. I'm on the 1x11 XT drivetrain with the 30 ring up front and the 46 big ring at the back. Climbing anything is a breeze with that combo. But that means I'm sacrificing a lot on the other end of the spectrum. I tend to spin out at around 33-35kmh on the small ring. I push that small ring a bit hard, I had to replace it twice in the last 6 months. Costs R90 to replace at BikeAddict, so not a big deal. The rest of the drivetrain still in excellent condition after almost 4000km. I am considering getting a 34T up front with the 11-50T cassette at the back. The ratio for climbing will more or less be the same then, but I won't be spinning out at 35kmh anymore. I'm not familiar with the Sram drivetrain so can't really help you there. I was also skeptical about going 1x, but I wouldn't go back to anything else. Less parts to service, less parts that can break. Overall just a cleaner setup.

Pull the trigger man!! You won't regret it!

Noted D&D - On the weight subject 15 is quite heavy although I am in the 100 KG range and can very easily ride with 2kgs + of water and crap... so I'm not that fussed by the weight. I also realize I'm not spending north of 60 < so I need to compromise somewhere. In my ive won the lottery world I would have one of each just for S and giggles.

Thanks Johan

All round I think this offers what I want...  pulling back the hammer...will  keep you all posted

Rather just contact Bike Addict and see if they have stock of the 2018 Spark 940. They had them priced at around R35k with much better components.

Yep, agreed. they have 2017 in Large and 2018 in Small and Medium.

the sweet spot is the 940 and 930.

the former was selling for R40k and the latter for R45k-R50k  if you shopped around..

the 930 would be the go to best value for money option of the lot.

....

I rode my previous bike for more than a year.  As I started going further and faster I got some strange aches and pains ....

I went for a professional bike fit ... WOW !!!!

Words does no justice to the MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT a proper bikefit does !!

I have since improved all my personal bests.

Why not go for a Stumpjumper ST?

It has no proprietary parts on it an reviewers seem to like it, however that's also to be debated cos I've never read a bad review of any bike.

I own a Spark 930 and an Epic.

The Epic is 2kg's lighter than the Spark an due to this most rides are on the Epic.

The only gripe I have with the Spark is a really exposed bottom bracket area, all trail bike have protection under the BB but Scott decided to rather save weight. Other than that it's a great bike

Rode with Twin-Lock before, current bike had normal lock-out for both shocks, removed the one for the front, wish I could do same for rear. All the cables just gets in the way and they cause more frustration for me personally and the mechanism breaks easily when you have a tumble. I prefer manual on both.
