Algoa FM responds after radio DJ is sacked for pointing out cruelty in dairy industry

Disgraceful, but that's $ talking. Can't upset the advertisers with the truth.

On a related note, a local Belgian vegan organisation, BE Vegan, recently launched an awareness campaign around the Belgian dairy industry called 'Melk is dodelijk'. The focus of the campaign was to highlight the fact that over 150 000 male calves are killed in Belgium every year, due to being a 'waste product' of the dairy industry. The campaign was done by placing signage on the sides of the trams in Ghent and Antwerp.

Predictably, the dairy org had a moerse hissy fit and requested the campaign to be stopped. The tram company, De Lijn, then suspended their approval of the campaign. BE Vegan proceeded to defend the merits of their campaign at the 'Jury voor Ethische Praktijken inzake reclame', which found that the campaign was factually correct in its position, not misleading, nor stigmatizing.

Here's a tough one. I've not really discussed this here, but here's a look into another way we relentlessly exploit our fellow earthlings: animal testing.

Shocking undercover video footage from SOKO Tierschutz and Cruelty Free International have revealed the terrible fate of laboratory animals in a German laboratory. The lengthy undercover investigation in the pharmacology and toxicology laboratory near Hamburg has shed light on the horrors that laboratory animals encounter behind closed laboratory doors. Beagles are left in blood-filled pens to die, monkeys are mistreated if they don't cooperate, all in the name of legal safety tests. Jen Hochmuth of Animal Rights said: "These terrible images show that at no time is the fear, pain and stress of innocent animals taken into account. Monkeys, dogs and cats are minimized to disposable products."

Whats wrong with us. 2 mins only of that video and I had to tap out. I'm literally feeling ill.

I can't remember why it came up but the other day but I got looking into products who don't test on animals.

Easiest easiest choice to make as a consumer by substituting products. You just have to be aware of what's happening - which admittedly isn't the first thing an average (or even well-meaning) person thinks of when standing in an aisle doing your monthly shop.

Lots to learn about behind-the-scenes.

Perhaps though this is easier with consumables, I don't know anything about medicinal/drug testing and how to go about that.

Ja. people are weird. they will be outraged that rhinos are killed so that their horns can be used as aphrodisiacs, and then go and apply layers of make-up that was tested on lab animals.

Save the rhinos, eat the cows, save the dogs, eat the pigs, save the dolphins, eat the tuna, save the cats, skin the minx, save the gorillas, eat the monkey brain, save the whales, eat the shark fin, save the gerbils, kill the rats and so on and so forth.

Us humans are a strange and hypocritical lot.

Don't look at me too closely. I'm only 90% of the way there. I still eat meat but only only as a treat.

I do have the fortune of living in Copenhagen which makes being environmentally friendly pretty easy.

Jeezus Christ.

The Department of Environment Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) advised that the amendment was made “due to changing farming systems in South Africa, game animals are included as these are already part of farm animal production systems in the country”.

When it was questioned by the Democratic Alliance in Parliament, a written reply stated no public participation process to such an amendment was required and that it followed a 2017 request “from the industry” to facilitate game farming production.

So much for the basic tenet of public participation in law making.

It defined this industry as representing “game breeder societies” whose role was “to ensure genetic purity and sustainable utilisation; do research on feeding and nutrition; define and measure traits of economic importance; and study regulatory gaps on game for food production”.

You have to ask what sort of people could actually do this and go home at night without remorse? I would love nothing more than seeing these guys on the wrong end of my steel toe capped boots....
