The Veganism Thread

Patch, you're very privileged to live in a city such as London which is so progressive in regards to vegan options. There's just everything - from Gregg's garage pies, to KFC/McD type junk food to more fine dining and even high tea (if that's your thing).

Take the wifey to Farmacy for a nice dinner or lunch. Great place and delicious food! Best book in advance though, as it get's crazy busy.

For some fried food, check out Temple of Seitan. They've got a few locations. Also, check out Unity Diner. It's a cool place and nicely located if you want to get your hipster on in Hackney. Mildred's is also great - there's one a 10m walk from King's Cross.

Planet Organic is great if you want to do some speciality grocery shopping. They also offer packaging free cleaning liquids, which is pretty cool.

Vegans dont win Comrades. I'll post Canadays interview next.

Just to be clear. Are you claiming that a vegan or vegans hasn't/haven't won the Comrades or that a vegan runner cannot win the Comrades?

On a sidenote on vegans and running ... I'm busy reading Scott and Jenny Jureks book North, it has almost nothing to do with diet but is a good writeup on his crazy record attempt of the Appalachian Trail FKT.

Worth a quick read if anyone is interested in endurance sports.

What about someone like Fiona Oakes . May not have won the Comrades but has plenty of other achievements...

Not sure, did a vegan win Comrades before? Would be interesting to get some insight, as I did with the Gerda interview.

If not..

Not to my knowledge, although I don't really follow running as a sport.

There's a hell of a lot of ultra endurance athletes who are vegan. So, perhaps in time there'll be a vegan who throws their hat into the ring.

Some science:

Plant-Based Diets for Cardiovascular Safety and Performance in Endurance Sports

Abstract: Studies suggest that endurance athletes are at higher-than-average risk for atherosclerosis and myocardial damage. The ability of plant-based regimens to reduce risk and affect performance was reviewed. The effect of plant-based diets on cardiovascular risk factors, particularly plasma lipid concentrations, body weight, and blood pressure, and, as part of a healthful lifestyle, reversing existing atherosclerotic lesions, may provide a substantial measure of cardiovascular protection. In addition, plant-based diets may offer performance advantages. They have consistently been shown to reduce body fat, leading to a leaner body composition. Because plants are typically high in carbohydrate, they foster effective glycogen storage. By reducing blood viscosity and improving arterial flexibility and endothelial function, they may be expected to improve vascular flow and tissue oxygenation. Because many vegetables, fruits, and other plant-based foods are rich in antioxidants, they help reduce oxidative stress. Diets emphasizing plant foods have also been shown to reduce indicators of inflammation. These features of plant-based diets may present safety and performance advantages for endurance athletes. The purpose of this review was to explore the role of nutrition in providing cardioprotection, with a focus on plant-based diets previously shown to provide cardiac benefits.

4. Conclusions Plant-based diets play a key role in cardiovascular health, which is critical for endurance athletes. Specifically, these diets improve plasma lipid concentrations, blood pressure, body weight, and blood glucose control, and, as part of a healthful lifestyle, have been shown to reverse atherosclerosis. The possibility that such diets may also contribute to improved performance and accelerated recovery in endurance sports is raised by their effects on blood flow, body composition, antioxidant capacity, systemic inflammation, and glycogen storage. These attributes provide a scientific foundation for the increased use of plant-based diets by endurance athletes.

Quorn's schnitzel still freaks me out. Its absolute witchcraft in terms of tasting identical to the old chicken option.

Haven't tried it - is it vegan or vegetarian though?

Anyways, had some 'fried chicken' in London from a place called Temple of Seitan. OMFG. So good! Proper junk food, but it's the rare indulgence for me.

Vegan, they even have the flaky kind of texture down. If you like a crumbed item, definitely worth a go. (or on your next visit...)
