I for one always enjoyed the Phil and Paul show - yes they cocked up and got things wrong at time but they were like the Murray Walker of Formula 1.

The world is a poorer place with the end of the Phil and Paul Show   :(

Indeed, or the Rob Warner of road cycling...

An iconic duo that will be missed I am sure. I used to watch the tour and look forward to the history lesson from those two.

Matt Stephens shared this on Instagram along with a glowing tribute. Paul was a really remarkable man and a wonderful commentator for many years even if it ended on a slightly sour note for us Saffers.c6a611407a7bbd0588002a0e0b2a12d6.jpg

Very sad. He spoke a few languages too. I wonder what happened? He seemed very fit.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the cause of death was heart failure ... Just a reminder that being fit is no guarantee of a long life I guess.

May he RIP

What an amazing person. RIP PS. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul and Phil on top of Alpe Du Huez in 1997 with my mate John. They had a few drinks with us and every time they saw us they would say "here comes the "boets"..... that will stay with me always. What a sad loss. Will be missed very much. Condolences to the Sherwin family.

I am battling to understand why there is so much negative sentiment and I may have missed something, but to me Paul S and Phil L  will always be the Voices of Cycling and no one comes anywhere close. They are the epitome of all that is cycle racing and the energy and wealth of knowledge that they share can never be equalled. I will miss Paul's incredible knowledge of the sport as well as insights to each and every cyclist personally. He was a legend and lest we forget, a top cyclist and athlete in his own right. Let's focus on his amazing contribution to our sport and to all the nay sayers, I challenge you to commentate just for 1 hour one day and provide the continuity and flow that only these 2 gents could provide. RIP Paul, you were a gentleman and your voice in cycling will be remembered long. May the road rise to meet you, the sun shine warm upon your face and may the wind be always at your back...........rest in Peace friend.

A very nice piece from cycling tips. Made me wonder how many hours of my life I've listened to them since the first 1987 edition of Le Tour as a wide eyed 8 year old. If I'm honest those broadcasts the visuals, the history / information imparted by P&P formed a love of France that has lasted most of my life. It's why I raced in Brittany and lived in the Languedoc. I always had a note book and wrote down the best looking places on each stage that you might miss in the conventional guide books as the sound track of July played out each year. Thanks Paul.

Have you seen pictures of him recently? This year especially he lost a lot of weight. He started to make Froome look fat. Even at the beginning of the year at TDU he already looked thinner than usual. I read heart failure so can only imagine there was something else wrong that was kept under wraps.

RIP.

How weird was it to listen to the first stage of the Tour Down Under and not have PS there alongside Phil? He seemed to be struggling as well, pausing in the usual spots but and waiting for his partner in crime to chime in then realising. Shame, felt for him.
