Thin paint/material on new Specialized bikes

So I've had my 2019 Stumpy ST Alloy for about a month, 450ish km.

Over the weekend I had a small rock fly up and hit the downtube, massive dent in the tube and obviously a lot of paint went flying as well. Bike was then put on a trailer with a Thule clamp style rack and in a few km, the paint on the topside of the down tube wore off to bare metal. While the road was quite rough, I had my Scott Scale on the same rack on the same route with not a single scratch.

Is this the norm with new bikes?

Then, what's the best way of "fixing" this. For the bottom I'm just going to fit one of those bash guards (where can these be bought?) but the top? Black nail polish?

If you bought it new...bring it back in and claim warranty. They need to look into it and sort.

If used, perhaps Bogus can help?

Bought new, but I do not believe it should be a warranty claim as it's obviously from my own doing. Just not used to bikes, especially trail bikes, being so fragile

Let the LBS or bike manufacturer make that call. You just rode the bike and transported it.

No ask, no gain. Let them come back to you. Try it at least

Wasn't there a previous issue with spez paint jobs and a whole bunch of returns and repairs?

OP, try the warrantee as you are right - it should be able to.withstand expected use... It doesn't sound like it was anything out of the ordinary...

I also have the new stumpy, been riding it for about 3 months, normally goes on a Thule 2 bike hang carrier off my bakkie. Ride lots of rough stuff, not a scratch yet.

Will like to hear how you resolve this.

My Enduro alloy frame has a few to be expected chips from some rough riding and an off or two. Paint seems pretty tough to me though. I'd get it checked out if I were you. That said, bike racks are notorious. I use a soft rag over the down tube to protect my bikes when clamped in a Thule roof top rack.

Some new bikes with "special" colors do come with warning stickers I have 2 Scott's with neon colors funny enough only the alu 1 had a warning of fading in sunlight (seen the same on some Cannondale's) but is covered by the warranty if it happens.

Not sure why manufacturers bring out something they know could be faulty and end up costing them money.

Not saying it's the case with your bike but I would still have it looked at by the bike shop.

On closer inspection, the frame has some damage where the toptube bag sat for 50km.surely this can't be right?

Of course it will have damage where the top tube bag sits or where a Thule rack clamps onto it - constant vibration and friction will do that to almost anything. I've had damage from a battery for a light that was on the frame for a 10km ride. Each and every one of my frames has paint damage where the Thule rack clamps onto it, that includes over the last few years Giants, Cotics, Specializeds, and an Evil, and that has been on Thule Pro Ride racks and Velo Compact Racks. Maybe a bit of negligence from my side, but it will happen at one point or another.

The only way to avoid damaging paint is to wrap a cloth or something around it on the area you are clamping the bike, or to apply something like invisi frame or AMS protection where you will attach something like a top tube bag.

Not the nicest thing to have scratches on a new bike, but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it, it's an mtb, you will fall on it, it will scratch.

There is an easier explanation.

Your bike has a matte paint finish.

You only have to look at it sideways and it scratches. Further, scratches shows up more with a matte finish

Matte looks great to begin with, but really is a pain to keep in top condition.

Understandable, but right through to the metal and dented?

For comparison, here's my 2012 Scott. Same bag has been on this bike for 3000km with same style rack
