Landing in a field with the gear down wouldn't give you any particular advantage would it? You'd lose speed quicker due to drag I imagine, and the gear would snap off first chance it got anyway. The engines were going to eat dirt either way, if they weren't already destroyed due to the original bird ingestion?

Gear could dig in and cause more fuselage damage, think the nose gear causing stress

in this case it was the engines that dug in and braked the aircraft, you can see the channels./troughs from the overhead pics.

I think the whole plane would be scrapped in anyway.  The only mission here was to get everybody out of it alive.

Expert said that it is better with the landing gear up as it would break off when landing and the debris could then rupture the fuel tanks leading to a possible fire. It could also big in and change the plane's trajectory before breaking.

Gear up there is also much less chance of the plane doing a cartwheel or something similar.

Pilots did a good job of keeping the wings level right up until impact

This, and dont stress about saving the aerie for its next schedule!. I would only consider gear down on a hard surface and even then a prepared one at that, like a dirt runway or quiet country road. The road scenario does bring in other dangers like telephone wires etc.

Makes sense to keep the gear up if you are going to land in a field - I wonder the sequence of events in the cockpit, the aircraft had barely taken off when it hit that flock of birds. Generally one retracts gear with positive rate of climb.

Anyone on here that flies CCM ? Anyone know where one could get CCM training in Western Cape?

I know NPL is also an option but that is another 18k for your license
