It's certain when I work on my car engine that I'll drop at least one bolt and never see it again. And when I'm done there will be bolts left over that have nowhere to go.

LOL I am sure that is the case with most cars. I won't allow that to happen on an aircraft/component that I need to sign out. Find that part or it's position or its AOG.

I understand the acronym is "Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim"?

HAHA so when we do our ETOPs training, the instructor starts out saying that. Some of the younger newer guys believe him. Extended Twin engine Operations.

D and I fitted new spotlights on the Defender the other day. Since we were working on the nose of it, I noticed one of the screws holding the grille was missing.....then saw a second missing one.......and started looking carefully. We decided to give the Landy a thorough looking-at and alltogether found twenty-something missing screws, nuts, bolts and rivetts. Still, nothing fell off and the rattling wasn't any louder than usual. We spent the best part of an afternoon finding and fitting new bits and the next day tackled the kind of roads where those were probably lost in the first place. So glad LandRover never made aeroplanes! Oh, wait, maybe.......

Luckily aircraft have so much built in redundancy. I have seen some pretty dodge russian aircraft that are still able to fly.

For those who don’t like flying in aircraft with propellers....

Just a big propeller with a cowling wrapped around it

 

 

 

Although the differences are its not driven through a reduction gear from,the gas turbine and there is no adjustment of the pitch on the fan in the front, although there might be some exceptions.

Yeah as far as I know there are no high bypass engines where the fan is variable.

 

Not much wrong with a turbo prop but usually they installed on smaller aircraft that don't fly as fast. The PT6 is an amazing turbo prop. The jet part of that engine is backwards. The intake is at the back and the exhaust at the front. That thing started out life as a water pump!!! Designed by a farmer if I am not mistaken then someone saw it and decided to use the idea for a aircraft engine.

 

Problem with an unducted fan is the speed of the blades, the tips can easily go through the sound barrier, hence the reduction gearbox.

This is rather interesting. I used to work on a rig and our crew changes was by helicopter. Every time that thing wound up, there was a distinct clunk when the rotor engaged. I would not have expected the clunk with a pneumatic engagement. 

 

Other difference with Turboprops is that the shaft into the reduction gears is not directly connected to the gas turbine, the jet engine it 'blows' against a disk with blades on it which turns the prop. Same with helicopters as well.

I will still find the time to give you guys an insight into ETOPS. Now that is an interesting subject that will impress people.

 

I am excitedly waiting patiently. ETOPS is something I have been noticing more and more lately. 

 

I stand corrected, but apparently the new A350-1000 is being touted for extended ETOPS, and this is a reason for it's supposed stiff competition against the 787 Dreamliner? As far as I recall, that is the reason Singapore Airlines now fly it on the longest current commercial route between Singapore Changi Intl and JFK in New York?

Correct, being a mostly propeller aircraft mechanic, I was just mocking the modern jet engines and people who are scared to fly in smaller propeller powered aircraft.

I did my apprenticeship on piston engines!!!!! Continental engines. I won't lie, I miss working on "piss cats".
