I dunno but to me it sounds like the cabin crew were acting as they were trained and instructed? Also, the fact all the passengers are milling about with their carry-on luggage in tow tells me that the incident might be somewhat blown out of proportion by the musician. Perhaps she is trying to earn some extra publicity by the "fire" in the cockpit?

How about being grateful they were close enough to land to make a safe landing, and not somewhere in the middle of a transatlantic crossing when the fire erupted. We might have had another Helderberg on our hands.

TBH, the repeated shouting of “brace brace keep your head down” seems a bit overboard and they are lucky there was not a panic stampede to get off the aircraft.

In situations like that it’s better not to tell the pax things like there is smoke in the cockpit.

Deborah Cox - Superstar?  I have never heard of her ;-)

Exactly.

This is why she is making such a huge fuss over seemingly nothing. Any publicity is good publicity.

She will yet again fade into obscurity after her 1.5 minutes of fame have passed.

Sure, you make a valid point. I am only guessing that since they were repeating the mantra, it must have been because they were instructed to by the cockpit? If so, then the pilots were thinking they might have a crash landing? Perhaps there's more to the story.

Calling on LWB...what's the scoop on the shop floor?

Fully agree with Swissvan wrt to maybe not mention there is smoke in the cockpit.  The repeated shoutout for brace was pure training that.  I have no idea what warning bells was shouting in the cockpit, but I can only but assume that they do not know what the cause of the smoke was and without knowing what the cause was they had no idea of the severity of the problem.  Then the procedure would be to get that plane on the ground asap.  Not knowing what you problem is you have no clue as to what could happen at the landing as things might be going wrong.  So prep the crew for a all out emergency and rather prepare for the worst and hope for the best.  It would be good to know what actually caused the smoke though.

I concur with both yourself and Swissvan.

It seems to me that the cabin crew acted according to instinct, as they get trained for these exact circumstances, and then get drilled regularly. Once the pilots instructed them to activate safety measures, they were also operating in the dark, not knowing what the expected outcome was to be. I am also sure that the pilots were focused on flying the aircraft, and not sharing the possible problems with the cabin crew. Sure, not sharing the bit about the smoke would make sense, now that they have 20/20 hindsight, but it could also be argued that they were all caught off-guard, and might have been on edge already following on from the unrelated door incident earlier.

In the end, all that matters is that the plane landed safely, and no injuries were sustained, and no lives were lost. I would much rather be moaning and debating the finer points of what happened in a airport in some remote part of the world than the alternative, much worse ending to this story.

That's a lot of smoke...and again people blocking the aisles getting bags

Maybe airlines should announce that during an emergency evacuation, survivors who have been caught on camera carrying luggage out and/or filming could be sued by the airline afterwards.  That might stop 2 problems at once.

Or install a locking mechanism on the overhead storage that operates in an emergency situation (with warning signs and red lights!).
