Confront a groups of cyclists about their riding behavior?

That's like walking into a den of hungry lions wearing a Lady Gaga meat dress and saying "I'm just here to talk".

Hell I've had middle fingers thrown at me when I tooted behind a group of riders I knew just so I could say hello.

Also. That is hilarious, nothing funnier than tuning them about it and they all look more than a bit sheepish. Maybe it's the tightness of lycra that makes you think you're billy big balls.

I think most of us have thick enough skin to cop a few fingers or embrace some prize english.

You may just be able to get through to say 1 in 10, 1 in 50 (?), as long as there is 1, probably worth it.

Edit: better chance of getting through to cyclists than taxis! and we haven't stopped hooting at them!

So what many are saying is that although the speed limit on Franschoek pass is 100km/h, everyone driving on the pass should expect cyclists 2 abreast at 15km/h.

So to be reasonably safe one should only drive at about 60km/h.

1. As cyclists we may be aware that there may be cyclists on the road, other drivers will not, ever.

2. Can cyclist rightly expect drivers to drive well below the speed limit just in case there may be cyclists in the road around the corner.

The argument that you should expect a broken down vehicle around a blind bend does not hold water. In that case the driver or someone will flag motorists or they will put a warning triangle in the road.

Some cyclists seem to be very entitled.

By all means cycle in the middle of the road, just give your wife and kids a good hug before you leave on your ride.

When a vehicle hits a cyclist it is always the cyclist that comes off second best.

Possibly but I reckon thehub is a better place to do it.

It creates a discussion whereas (in most cases) confronting a group of cyclists results in 15 cyclists yelling at 1 driver.

down

point is, thread serves no purpose other than getting forum members to bash each other while the culprits will probably do it again this weekend.

6 pages later and they have not owned up and undertake never to do it again, while every on the threads gets on the horses for a lekker joust

You must be nuts to attempt it.Cyclists are the pits when out on the road.Their behaviour is disgusting and I avoid them like a plague....Unfortunate but true.

the hub is A place yes, but it feels pretty small sometimes. Whereas there a quite a few more k@k cyclists on the road and other than confrontation I don't know how you'd reach them.

I agree with the premise of discussion though. Awareness is great. But lets also be honest, how many 'discussion' threads head into bashing and anger, and eventually IF any concession  is made its when the topic has morphed into something very different.

Agreed. Maybe having more conversations in the bunch would work.

Or cyclists calling out bad cyclist behaviour...

The downside is that while the road infrastructure stays the same in SA you're always going to have conflict.

Cars travel way faster and drivers are pretty stressed - cyclists ride way slower and are quite volatile. Put both parties on the same piece of tar and trouble ensues!

When I'm in SA I rarely ride on the roads - mountain biking is way safer, more relaxed and most of the time you can ride 2 abreast without issues. I'm really selective about the roads I ride on.

I can't remember the hubber that said it but he needs a box of bells - in SA it's better to live like a dog than die like a lion. Much as it pains the moral/fair man inside me it's true.

so you want gillette to make an add about razors and cyclists.....

#metoo

And world peace!!!!!

Edit: On a serious note though - why is it so hard to #notbeadoos these days? 95% of problems raised on thehub could be solved by #notbeingadoos.

Edit edit: I'm giving away free memberships to this club - anyone can join :-)

After having read through 6 pages of utter BS I have come to 2 conculsions.

1. The OP has displayed, through his original post and all subsequent replies, that he is a decent oke who is genuinely concerned for the safety of cyclists on that pass.

2. There are people on the Hub who I would not like to go on a ride with.

Have a good weekend all and take it easy.

Some random statistics to show what cycling should be like:

In Denmark 27 cyclists were killed in 2017. 19 were single bicycle incidents (mostly people >65 years old).

8 were killed by bicycle/vehicle interactions.

3,153,000,000km are ridden by Danes annually.

1 cyclist per 394,000,000km is killed.

That's pretty good motivation for ALL South Africans to ride and drive with a little more caution.
