Just when I thought I've seen it all.

Well at least you didn't find out the hard way. You dodged a bullet.

Better to have a broken stem than broken teeth.

There's nothing wrong with Ryder products. But I get the head space you're in now.

For your own peace of mind you could snag a Rapide stem in the same price range.

Great quality as well as a great reputation. You can order them here

If you're not comfortable fitting it yourself just get a refund from the lbs and go elsewhere.

Peace of mind is everything.

I'm guessing what happened is that they tightened the top until the faceplate met the stem then they cranked the bottom until it was too tight.

Spacing between faceplate and stem must always be the same so the the round surfaces on the bars and stem match.

Check the spacing top and bottom and let us know the result...

not so sure it is a torque issue .... I personally "may have" completely over torqued a couple of stems bolts, and many other bolts in my earlier days of working on my bikes, and have never had this issue before.

I am impressed the bolts did not sheer off.

Ask for a new one and have them torque it in front of you, if they use a 3ft extension bar you know the problem.

I have snapped bolts before the other bits!

Not always - Renthal stems case in point.

What would cause the bolts to sheer off?

There was never any pressure applied to the stem, I literally unloaded the bike from the vehicle and pushed into garage - 3 hours got to the bike and noticed the broken stem. Same thing happened the previous day.

I'd have thought the bolts would tear out the threads before the face plate cracked. There's something wrong with that stem design or manufacture IMO.

Nope, the face plate is made of a softer grade of aluminium as it has to be able to flex . Think of it as a rigidish retaining strap. Over tightening the bolts won't necessarily strip the threads because the stem body is made of a much harder alloy (usually 7000 airhardening series).

I highly doubt a torque wrench was involved with the fitting of that stem  :cursing:

the tension in the surace of the faceplate basically started tearing the material. Good thing you didn't ride the bike.

Please please please find another LBS. The person who did this to your bike shouldn't be let near any bicycles until extensive brainwashing on good bicycle mechanics has taken place

I mean when the tech did the bolts off. I have had an instance where I oiled a bolt before re inserting (rookie error) there was so much less friction the torque wrench snapped the head of the bolt off.

Okay, so my wife went back with my bike just now.

The tech from the workshop is convinced that there is a defect on the batch they received and will be sending it back to the agents.

They installed a 3rd brand new stem - this time a different brand which according to them is better - PRO LT.

Hope this solves my problem.

Thank you all for your valuable input. I will revert back should the issue occur again - if it does I will definitely ask back my money and go elsewhere.
