If you cassette is not worn out it would be much cheaper and simpler to just get a 32t chainring on the front. That depends on whether you feel you have enough top end speed or not though.

If replacing the chainring with a 32t is not an option then I think you have kinda answered your own question, get a cassette with a 50t granny.

I am currently running 34 front and 1x42 at back. Not struggling to much on climbs, but sometimes I need a bit more help. Do I upgrade to 11x46 or 11x50?

if you're not really battling with the 34 then I don't see the need to increase the range at the back, however if you really want to change agree probably best to just go with a 32.

But do the maths in terms of ratios

going to a 32 from a 34 will yield a 5.8% difference in terms of "ease" of climbing and loss of top end.

I have the 34 - 11/46 Sunrace cassette, on very long climbs you wish for just a little more help but in the end you know you did not really need it  depending on the deal you are getting, the cassette and chainring could end up costing you the same price if you shop around.

This trade-off between spinning out and having sufficient gears to climb every mountain is a perennial problem and one the industry is sure to address with an innovative approach.

I suspect someone will come up with a product that will allow you to have two chainrings up front (!), say a 38 and a 26, with the ability to change between them whilst riding.

On down, flat or gently undulating terrain you could shift onto the "big ring" and never spin out and on the uphill you drop onto the "inner ring" and climb to your heart's content.

If it were me, I'd call it "2x" (pronounced two by) and have 10 or 11 closely spaced cogs on the cassette covering say 11-34.

Watch this space, it is sure to come....

I always have a good laugh when I see Bike Addict advertise 1x11 XT can be "upgraded" to 1x12 Sram NX for R3000 more or something like that. In what world is going from XT to NX an upgrade..

By the way OP.. I've recently started running 34T 11-50. Shifting is not as crisp as it was on 11-46, but after a few rides you don't notice it as much. I might need a hanger extension..it's cheap and will probably sort it out. Maybe go for 34T oval 11-46 if you have some money lying around for the oval.
