If gov. were to aggressively take on the taxi industry they would uplift our public transport system to a point where people can efficiently, cheaply and safely use the system .... taxis will always be the "last mile" kind of a solution for now though.

If the Government was serious about Taxis they wouldn't even worry about our cause. They would simply try and tax them first. The fact that nobody even talks about this industry in parliament shows that there is other motives or fear.

And untaxed.

One of my staff owns a few taxis, mostly does jhb to Zim runs...

Firstly, most of the taxis in and around Gauteng are owned or financed by traffic cops... My guy says the association meetings are 70% cops and 50% attend in uniform.

I would love to know how many taxi bosses are involved in govt... I'm sure it would be a massive %..

Secondly, I know they drive like *** and are pretty lawless, but I echo the fact that my experiences on a bike, with taxis, are pretty great... They've always been the first to give loads of space and think with me...

Thirdly, as much as we despise them, it is 20 potential single drivers in cars off the road in one taxi.. If you think you hate traffic with them, imagine traffic without them? In a lot of ways taxis almost exactly echo cyclists... The feel they know the flow of traffic better than the law allows for, and they're technically doing more for traffic reduction than the cars they're pissing off...

Unfortunately, if you're driving, just drive the safest way you can. There's no ways anything a taxi could do on the road is worth my life... On a bike, I fear the mommies in a discovery far more than the taxis...

Just a different perspective, still sucks for this guy on the bike and I hope it hasn't caused anything serious.

I have to disagree with you there, I don't think it's that high at all. I would say most of those who use taxi's don't own cars.

I fully agree with our other points though of who the bosses are.

Spoke to a guy once who worked for Toyota, he said he never booked the taxi's in for services. The bosses only brought their Prado's and Land Cruisers in for servicing.

A friend of mine used to own some petrol stations. One of them had a parts shop, like a midas. The taxis would tell him they will fill the fleet by him if he gave them brake pads once a month. He told me it wasnt worthwhile.

The user who posted this video on twitter has some horrific other stuff on his feed.

I did not bother checking the user out, but from his comments on the video, he has "wit baas" mentality, so I would not be surprised.

But you have to assume that if this was a first world scenario where no taxis existed and everyone was above the breadline, then these people would be additional cars...

I hate to say it but taxis are a necessary evil... It would be really nice if they would drive better and be more considerate, but honestly, we have to accept that there will be looooong term effects from our past that won't be solved in a day...

Unfortunately it isn't a first work scenario. We may technically be first world but we don't think first world. The vast majority of our population will never be able to afford a car and rely heavily on public transport.

You are correct in saying that taxis are unfortunately a necessary evil. Funny thing is that Government inherited a working public transport system (along with a lot of other things that worked), but they let it get to the state that it is currently in. When taxis first appeared, it relieved them of the responsibility of providing public transport for the masses and it allowed commuters to get closer to home as the taxis went where the commuters lived and worked. They wren't bound to a bus route. They have since created their own routes based on demand. The problem is that the industry started out small and was unregulated. I believe that this has come around to bite them in the arse.

I used to be able to catch a bus from my neighborhood into town to go to the beach. Those buses haven't traveled that route for a very long time.

What is the solution to our problem? I don't know. A step in the right direction would be a little bit less of a sense of entitlement and a bit more tolerance and respect (From everybody!) for each other and our laws.

If you assumed that, you would also need to assume a 1st world country would have state run, cost effective public transport.

I get what you are saying, but would say 'it's a bunch of necessary workers getting to work on time'....

What does all this mean?

Evil in what way? Do you mean the lawless way they drive? In which case why MUST this be a necessity? Why aren't we/you holding all road users to the same standards?

A bus carries much more people than a taxi, just saying. Also I would rather use a bus. I wont use a minubus taxi purely for safety reasons. Used taxis often in my student days, was even the fare collector in one. Even then I prefered the bus.

I assume you haven't had to drive near the Golden arrow busses? If you think taxis are bad, wait until the vehicle is 4 times larger....

No, I'm not condoning their behaviour, not at all... It's just an unfortunate result of too many people living too far from their jobs that pay too little. They will, unfortunately, always be around, and they will drive like crap until govt. Stamps down, which they won't. So rather don't let it get you all hyped up and just drive to get home safely.

For sure, and obviously this is part of the imagination land we are all going to pretending there are no taxis around... But it seems everyone would like to get rid of them, but no one is taking into consideration what would happen if they weren't around...

Look at LA... Fantastically first world, but I've heard traffic is an absolute abortion... Egypt, same story, Rome, Turkey... There are a while bunch of more civilised cultures that have no minibus taxis, and their traffic system is beyond a nightmare.

They're not pleasant, theyre infuriating, and they're downright dangerous to most people inside and out, but, they're still transporting a massive percentage of people who would have to otherwise be on the road.

I still can't believe our population hasn't gone the way of places like Vietnam... I would wager that a motorcycle/scooter is so much more accessible to the man just coming out of, or trying to get out of poverty, and securing freedom of movement, but with cars being the massive status symbol they are, most would rather use a taxi until they've saved enough for the car... Pity, really...

Yes definitely there would be no argument to that, bigger vehicle carrying more people than single people alone in their cars.

Yes taxi's are a necessary evil based on routing accessibility etc

I've tried taking the bus home but all the busses by the time they get to my stop they super full where the taxi is more frequent so as you say necessary evil.

I wouldn't mind them on the roads, I'd probably make use of them more if they weren't so flipping arrogant with that I'll push you out the water attitude.

Not really... There are more commuters here where I am than single car drivers. The problem is the taxis have such a monopoly that they sabotage and prevent the growth of the public transport system as much as they possibly can. What there should be is more buses and reliable train network
