Need help with heart rate spike?

Recommended Posts

I think I should be dead.

I normally ride my 25kms in the Cradle 3 times a week. I track my "stats" using TomTom HRM and Cadence sensor linked via Bluetooth to my iPhone 7. This week I bought a second hand TomTom Multisport in excellent condition and took it our for a test yesterday.

Using my iphone to track I normally get heart rate of between 142 - 146 bpm and cadence 62 - 98.

Yesterday the TomTom watch recorded 168 - 208 bpm and cadence of 66 - 162.

Can anyone tell me if this is accurate? Im 50 and weigh 118kgs, a heart rate of 208 shoulda killed me and a cadence of 162 would have seen my legs come off.

Cadence of 162 is insanely unlikly... HR of 208 only likely if you have a cardiac anomaly or the belt is loose or has an issue.

Try again with the hr strap tighter would be my first reccomendation - and the second is that at your age and weight you need a proper cardiac stress test done any way - get that arranged via your GP asap.

If you are getting false Cadence info  (you would know if you did 162 rpm), then it is very likely that you are getting false HR info too.

But listen to Dr V12 - no harm in getting checked out...

Thanks for the replies, going to see the Doc for that cardiac stress test and seeing about sorting out different kit. its an excuse to finally get the HRM I always wanted. :)

My wrist HRM (TomTom Spark) usually went crazy on climbs, as soon as I flexed my arm it could not detect accurately anymore. A strap across my chest fixed that for me, but as has been said, no harm in getting it checked out.

So i took V12man's advice and went for that Cardiac Stress Test. Despite having to come to terms with having the life expectancy of a fruitfly, I am now quite sure that its a dodgy heart rate monitor. Thanks for the help.

Definitely the strap for the HR, the older it gets the more it stretches. I find that on my Polar as well.

On the cadence however: You would've felt a 162  :D

Sounds like that excellent tomtom multisport you bought is a bit dodge with the readings.

Did you also record with your iphone like you normally do?  If so were the readings the same?

Can also be caused by powerlines....and strangely enough in the old days when we rode at Kyalami racetrack in the evenings, half way down the mineshaft my Polar would get into a tizz....same spot always...

Sex also causes heart rate spikes

My HRM only takes a measurement every thirty seconds so would probably miss the spike

I abandoned the heart rate strap and used the wrist monitor on the watch instead. Readings were way better and matched the readings I get from the iphone7.

I have lost a lot of weight and I'm thinking I should have adjusted the strap as I went. The testing continues but for now I'm happy using the watch for HRM.
