I am a huge fan of the Apple Watch. I upgrade every year and am on my 3rd watch now (s4). I love the functionality and find the heart rate incredibly accurate when I am cycling. When running, less so, but then I just pair it to my strap and it is perfect (also saves the battery). As part of my job, I have spent time with the team that designs the sport functionality of the Apple Watch, and they are switched on. Every iteration of the fitness functionality has been specific and measured to minimise issues. I am probably slightly biased because I work for apple, but the attention to detail and functionality is incredible.

For my needs, as a cyclist / occasional runner, bit of time in the gym, the watch is perfect. I charge it every night and it measures my sleep etc and I use most of the functionality that it has. If I was a triathlete, I would be looking at a dedicated sports watch, but until then I am very happy with the Apple Watch.

As far as dragging the watch across the tarmac and comparing it to a Garmin that has also been dragged across the tarmac, I’ll have to take Dave’s word that the Garmin would remain pristine, but I’ll not be trying that any time soon. I have fallen, crashed, jumped and slid many times with an apple watch and have yet to damage one. However, as with my Garmin 520, I have insurance if I did break it.

Ok I am not going to defend a Fenix but seeing as you are the 'pro GPS accuracy Tester' I will speak up.

"Accurate GPS?" Well that is a broad term, GPS is actually only the American Constellation of satellites and their positioning system and in terms of an accurate GPS as a statement is total bull because the System supplies the same readings to most devices using it (except where tactical importance to limit location services is required). The sensor that reads the system is where the accuracy is determined by both internal and external factors(topography, weather, big shiny surfaces, battery saving mode etc.). The Americans also tend to control who receives what signals from their GPS this lead to other constellations because they can and do just shut it down for certain countries as and when they please so certain countries built their own versions.

The Apple and a lot of the newer Sports watches are able to read signals from GLONASS and Galileo signals- meaning they read other constellations of location satellites providing time/ location information. This improves accuracy as more signals are pinged and there is more input into the position calculation. The receivers are also more limited by external factors than internal factors and the big jagged lines are nothing to do with accuracy they are purely based on the frequency of measurement/calculation which is done to manage battery life and storage. Accuracy is the position of the points at the end of the big jagged line and I am 90% sure your spherical trig and understanding of geodesy is not up to par to calculate those positions more accurately, even if you had a device which could give you the raw data to calculate it yourself.

Apple watch is a fashion accessory not a sports watch. When it gets a proper screen or you have done some real studies into the 'GPS accuracy' then you can talk until then it is just soft gadget meant for braais not real outdoors. There is a reason guys like Conrad Anker are not wearing them but your average tour de coffee shop specialist will find it brilliant...

Far from accurate, as I said, out of a debate amongst friends, we decided to try it.

Shame for those saying "Fanboi" etc....   I literally spent my own money on a Garmin due to great performance from my 820, and the general consensus that they were THE watch to have.

No.  It's not THE watch.   The only things people harp on about are non-issues TO ME.    I've binned it many times on my DH bike wearing an Apple watch, and it survived.  And if it breaks, go get fixed or get new one.  I have insurance too... it's truly a non-issue.   The only thing I like about the Garmin is the battery life.   But the Apple tracks indoor activities better, integrates better etc.   That said, I dont wear a watch unless on my DH bike (a garmin looks weird on a DH bike) as a have a Garmin GPS already.   But running, indoor HIIT, paddling, outdoor running, I've resorted back to my old Apple watch.

Oh, and as you said, it can use better GPS information, and you word it like a negative?  I'm sorry, more points, located better on tight trails appears to be a million times better.

Reminds me of why this place is so weird and I generally just sell **** on the classifieds and reply to the odd thread.   If you go against the mighty popular view here, jesus! burn at the cross!

Oh, and have you ever scrolled down on a Garmin Connect website page?  There's a button even defending their lack of tracking accuracy! hahahaha.    :whistling:

Been super happy with my Fenix 5. Has lots of cool little apps and stuff for the sailing side of things and the Mountain biking profile does the job too. The wrist heart rate monitor isn't super accurate especially when water gets under it, but you can just get a HR strap. The best part about the watch is that it isn't fragile, I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and the anodizing on the bezel is wearing slightly on the edges but not a single scratch on the screen and hasn't given me a problem once. Also two years later and I still get a minimum of a week and a bit battery life out of it. This obviously depends on how much you use the GPS. The watch lasts for 2 weeks easily if your just using it as a time piece.

Still have my fenix x3 .I had to replace the strap once .My fenix x5 uses 50% battery life on a 8h mtb stage recently .I have compared the heart rate with a wahoo chest strap on a wahoo kickr and it was very much the  same .These watches are super tough and battery life is excellent .Since i started wearing mine i have not bothered with a bike computer

So went to check for n fenix 5 and it turns out I can only get the 5s and plus here atm. so it seems il have to do apple watch on disc again to have a watch. Cant fork out that much atm.

Where is here? What's your budget like? See if you can't find a NOS Fenix 5X which is usually less than 10k. Colour maps, great battery life, No Garmin pay and music though.

So why don't you purchase online for Discovery if not available in your area?

Consider the 935XT which is the same as the F5 and cheaper than the apple https://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/garmin-fr935
