I have a series 3 Apple watch, even though it’s great, if it wasn’t for the Discovery benefit, I would have gotten a Fenix. My brother has one and its awesome

I was going to get a Fenix. As I only cycle, and did not require the multi sport stuff (or maps), I opted for the Vivoactive 3. The Fenix 5 is more durable, but it’s also heavier. The Vivoactive functions more like a smartwatch (touch screen and single button), but it lacks much of the multisport capabilities of the Fenix (and it does not have maps).

Ugh.  I'll swim against this.

After years with an Apple, I went Garmin.   Holy crap, it was like going backwards 500 years to an old Casio.

Will get Apple series 5 later this year.  More accurate GPS and heartrate a MILLION times more accurate.  Only downside is shitty battery life, but then I suppose it makes sense the Garmin lasts longer as it's driving like 5 pixels.

Really regret my watch "upgrade" decision.  Should have gotten a Watch Series 4.    My stupid 820 which I love swayed me the wrong way.   I also now look like I need Salomon shoes, a puffer jacket and must talk about stage racing non-stop when I see my wrist.  Boet.

Before I bought a Fenix I went through reviews on different watches. Youtube videos to watch are Desfit, Rizknows and DC Rainmaker. The Apple is suppose to have to have the best HR sensor. You can use it without having your cell with you. Fenix has music, Garmin pay, smart notifications when connected to cell. That being said buy the Fenix 5 Plus. Its the most versatile of the range. As an alternative at a lower price point look at the Instinct ( cannot pair with Garmin swim). Your deciding factor should be what are you really going to use it for and then look at which features are available on which device.

I'm a massive Apple fan, got the Apple Watch when it came out and upgraded one. Great screen and great integration if you have an iPhone. It's light and really comfortable to wear.

But... it's not quite a sports watch yet.

It's delicate and scratched pretty easily. Cracks if dropped.

Battery only lasts one day. Well, not a full day if you use GPS tracking.

The strap is not secure enough for sport.

The fenix5 has a basic display when compared to the Apple Watch but it gives you all the info you need. It's highly accurate and has a massive community.

It's strong, really strong, I've kited, surf'd and MTB'd with mine a lot. I've crashed with it so that it was completely covered in sand and it didn't get a scratch, I was amazed.

The battery lasts almost a full week and that with every kind of tracking left on. If you want to track your sleep it will and will have no significant impact on the battery. With the Apple Watch, you would have to charge it if you wore it that day and then again in the morning if you wanted to wear it for the day.

It's quite bulky to wear but the scraps are really well made and are very comfortable.

Happy to answer any questions here, I know it was a big decision for me leaving my Apple Watch but I've not looked back.

Apple doesn't have sensor integration.

For the Fenix you can get speed, cadence, power, indoor trainer, temperature, heck even HR. Something like a Scosche is significantly more accurate for cycling anyway - though wrist HR is just fine for your jogging.

Frankly without sensor support and the integration into a wider ecosystem that comes with it, the Apple remains an excellent lifestyle watch with some decent fitness features. The Fenix is the other way around.

It's about what you want from it.

Apple is a toy for to show people you think you are fit and that you have money.

If you want a real sports watch get the Garmin or the Suunto 9 Baro.

Actually get the Suunto anyway, all the features and the Suunto SA Warranty gives you 2 free strap replacements, 5 years warranty and a ton more.

Also take an apple watch and a suunto 9 with the saphire glass and drag them on their screen on rocks and/or tar and tell me which is a sports watch and which is meant for tracking shopping trips.

Weakest on-bike unit they've made in a while. I suspect the newest iteration of the 820 may have solved the issues users had.
