they're riding the next size down to keep the front centre in check. Sizing doesn't feature here. they want a balanced bike for up and down.

McConnell would look stretched on anything. She's short (1.58m). Shes already on the smallest frame they make. I reckon only Sina Frei is shorter

You're the one who mentioned size first but now it doesnt matter? Okay...

The McConnell bike looked big for her. That is stretched out a la long low and slack. I bet she had the shortest stem on it too. Quite clearly climbed and descended perfectly well enough for second place.

What, like selling bikes that people can actually afford?

there are plenty of bikes that people can actually afford .... the thing is most people do not want average spec parts and then the really cheap ones are only good for cycling to the shop and back.

it would be great to have very affordable bikes with a reliable and properly functional component spec. on it....... the bike manufacturers can also only go so low on their cost as they still have to buy tyres, drivetrain etc, which are also flipping expensive.

if you truly want economical decent bikes, then the whole bike industry has to step up to the plate to bat.

a simple thing such as a GX cassette is robbery ..... this as an example.

Yes it doesn;t matter whether you want to call it a small medium or large, what they're looking for the appropriate front centre that's short enough to provide the  handling they're looking for. I.e. long low slack trend doesn't mean anything to them. they won't stay with a medium if the new medium is too long, they will just size down to keep  the distance between the wheels close to what they like.

Like I said, McConnell is short. the Mondraker RR dnges isn't as long as they want you to believe it is. they just don't make an Extra Small which would probably fit her better. My guess is she would be riding the smallest frame with the shortest stem anyway, no matter what she's fitted to.

For the vast majority of us, Alivio spec parts and Suntour shocks are more than adequate. Problem is that people want what the pros ride.

There are lots of well priced bikes out there.

I beg to differ. I agree we don't all need the top end parts, but lots of guys here I know in person, and lots of them ride their mid spec bikes to their absolute limits....

We don't all need Fox Live valve equiped bikes, but that doesn't mean an entry level part is gonna do the job. I think what many people forget is that you get beginners, you get pros, and then you get everything inbetween - that means that there are many riders who are pretty close to pro level (be it fitness/skill/whatever) that can actually make use of high end parts.

Either way - we don't buy what we buy only because it is what we need - we buy what we buy because we want it, nothing wrong with that.

technically speaking, on a bike with Suntour Shocks you can 6th place start at the XCO following a good showing at the Short XC thingie majig

If you want bike prices to drop then you must get trump to drop his tariff war with China. HE tells you it doesn't affect anyone but the Chinese but this just illustrates what a slime ball he is.

Any US company sourcing parts from China (all of them) pays the tariffs which is handed over to YOU

On the Alivio, agreed for the most part. On the diff between a Suntour XCM and a 34 Grip 2, for example, the vast majority will most definitely feel the difference with both set up to their best settings for the rider. That includes rank beginners. Even if they only notice it being smoother / less jittery for their hands
