yup .. don't make sense. . hopefully they will change next year .

It’s totally nonsense.

If for example Springfield (girls) has 10 entrants and all finish in the top 10 of a respective race, and SACS (boys) enters 10 in their race and all finish in the top 10, the overall result will show (at a school) level SACS is producing better cyclists than Springfield.

At school athletics (and indeed) any athletics it’s about the number of medal finishes.

It seems to my uneducated mind that there’s something wrong.

Maybe, just maybe, it relates to the SASC rules ....

Compare rules 8.11.4 vs 8.11.6 :

8.11.4. Points shall be awarded to the top 25 positions in the following order starting from 1st position: 35, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

8.11.5. It is recommended that every finisher from position 26 onwards receive 1 point.

8.11.6. For events with less than 50 starters, points will be allocated to top 10 positions in the following order starting from 1st position: 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

MAYBE, just maybe a call was made that the girls numbers fall into 8.11.6 .....  I am SURE that when that rule was made is was NOT intended to differentiate between girls and boys, but purely looked at the rate of scoring points vs the size of that group ..... nobody would be that brave in this PC era ....  :cursing:

EDIT - at the rate the sport is growing ALL groups may exceed 50 by next year and this may soon be a non issue .....

Race Size was factor in 2017.. dropped 2018 onwards. 2017 had split on size and gender if I recall, not at pc now to verify

Perhaps, but as it is, girls cannot compete on an equal footing to boys when it comes to their contribution to the overall school result. Note emphasis on contribution.

Thank you Karman

Interesting to hear how the sport and rules have progressed over the years.

Respect to the organisers for growing the sport at such a rate !!!  And huge sympathy for having to deal with all the logistics .....  (having done my bit in other areas I DO understand and appreciate the effort that is put in behind the scenes)

JIP !

in this day and age it should truly be equal .....

Hopefully we will soon see an era where girls and boys earn the SAME points for their schools for similar positions.

I did a quick check of the "girls schools" .... now imagine where these ladies would have finished on the overall log if they were scored the same as the boys :

- Herchele Girls PS

- De Tyger PS

- Blouberg Ridge PS

Not to mention a good few mixed schools where the "low scoring girls" got more points that their boys .... imagine where Beaumont PS could have been on the log ....

What would REALLY be nice though - if each area would publish their rules at the start of the season and APPLY it consistently throughout the season.

There will never be one set of rules that makes everybody happy, just the nature of the beast !!!

But as long as everybody knows (or have access to) the rules at the start, and those rules are applied ....

Any further information as to how the SPUR series will be run in the WESTERN CAPE for 2020 ?

Very possible that these are the HIGH SCHOOL dates.  Also note two of the venues are different to the primary school venues.

PLEASE NOTE - the organisers, for the PRIMARY SCHOOLS have been VERY busy communicating to the various school's "Teachers, Team managers & Parent Representatives" over the last couple of weeks.  We got the confirmation of the dates last week, but the venues were only confirmed this morning.  As the "parent representative" for Maritz's school I have been flooded with information from the organisers.    I CAN confirm these people are putting a LOT of effort into this !

Would expect the various "representatives" to feed this information to the parents during the next week or two .....

Pity that both August dates clash with sports dates from Maritz's school .... so they wont be well represented this year.  Just the way the chips fall ....  Worst part is that I will be off the bike for the next 2 to 3 months, so Maritz's training is going for a ball ....  :whistling:   guess we can see how well suited an IDT is for training an 8 year old ....

We are the only family racing SSL at our Primary School. So no flooding of information here. I penned down 25 April in Bloemendal for Spur#1! Just checked and saw that the website is updated to reflect this but a few weeks ago it wasn't ;).

I wonder why PS and HS events are split now? Last year they were at the same day.

btw, the website says PS Spur #1 is on 22 May, which is a Friday. Your 23 May makes more sense...;)

Hi SCD, please contact :

Annelize Ziehl-Owens

chairperson@wcschoolscycling.co.za

Send her an email explaining your situation.  You will be added as a "parent representative" for your school.  You will then get whatsapps keeping you posted.

PS - 2 maybe 3 kids from our primary school taking part this year.  So I am the duly "volunteered" parent representative for our school.  As the SPUR dates clash with 2 school sport days Maritz will be the only one doing the full SPUR series.
