Which one would you choose:

Option A

±24 Hour flight; 7-8 hour flight to Dubai, around 10 hour lay-over in Dubai and then 7H30 flight to Hamburg

R10 000

Option B

±15 Hour flight; 12 hour flight to Frankfurt, 1H30 lay-over in Frankfurt and then ± 1H30 flight to Hamburg

R15 500

Option A - a ten hour layover is long enough to get out and see the city a bit.

No visa for Dubai...Have to stay in the airport...

Check out Hipmunk.com - Like Expedia but they have a nice representation of the timing of flights and sort flights by some combination of cost and time.

I'd say a 1h30 layover in Frankfurt is more of an issue regarding stress of getting to your next flight - it's not alot of time especially if you have to do passport control in Frankfurt! 10h in Dubai - go see the city, or spend 50odd USD to get into a lounge (you'll probably spend at least 20 USD on refreshments in that time anyway).

I personally would take Option B.

Probably cos I have done my fair share of longish  airport transfers when I was younger and deciding which country was 'home'.

Some countries gives you a "day pass" to explore if your layover is longer than x hours. Find out if that might be the case with dubai.

If not, how long will you be away for? And if you take the more expensive ticket, does it eat into your pocket money?

check with your (a) travel agent, 10 years back as a SAfrican you did not need a Visa for Dubai.

We went and checked out the local mall. But be aware, nothing opens until 10am.

how long is a piece of string?

essentially is the R5k a big deal for you, none of us can answer that question.

I am with cblake. Not to nice place, and if you have been to any mall, you have seen the airport.

if you've seen one shopping centre, you've seen a mall

Get there as quick as possible. If you have one week, why would you spend 10 hours in the middle of nowhere?
