So, my laptop crashed and burned the other day. I have been in IT my entire working life and have never bought a computer ever before, always being supplied one by the company I was working for.

 

So I bought a lil HP, works well enough for my needs and my lad can use it for school projects etc.

 

Question is, I need to buy an office suite and quite happy with 2016, I don't want to get into a subscription service as I don't need that. I see some sites are offering office 2016 with word/excel/popwerpoint and one note for 25 pounds or thereabouts.

 

Are these legit licences?

Google Docs.

 

I’ve used (and my family, wife and both kids at school) for a few years now. Very happy. And their cloud storage part has saved our bacon a few times. Also, it’s been great when I’ve been traveling to help edit some homework etc with the boys.

Try Libreoffice first.  Open source and free and does pretty much everything Office does

100% this. I use LIbre at home, literally no point paying for MS office for the stuff I do with it.

If you need a mail client then thunderbird is really good.

Some IT companies with large volume agreements will allow staff to purchase at their bulk discount rate, last time I checked I could buy office through my company for R150.

Why buy office ?

 

These companies are all forcing cloud based systems on you. Eventually you will be paying every year for "product development".

 

For basic usage office LIbre to be offline. But I would suggest using google docs, google sheets and the other google based products.

 

At some stage team work is going to be required for school projects, getting them onto google is the way to go.

WPS office. Free with a very indiscreet ad... Which you can pay to remove ($20/year)

 

I have been using it without paying for a year and it has been brilliant. 100% compatible with office...

 

The only thing missing is Ctrl y in Excel... Which I realised I used way more often then I thought!

Its a tough one..

If your don't want heavy cost with offline, go Libra office, very good, lightweight alternative to MS office..and thunderbird for email ( whats nice about Libra is for the student especially engineering it has a math app)

If you would like cloud backup ability to work on any machine, google doc's

If you Insist on Microsoft, you have 2 routes, A once-off Office 2016 version, I believe its about R1900, however it is only Excel, word and PowerPoint

or the subscription based one for R900/year or R90/m

this gives you Outlook ( still the best Email client especially the calendar functions) 1tb one-drive and a few other apps. 

storing to cloud is very handy for data protection, ease of changing/replacing PC's etc, also gives you the Ability to access your files as long as you can login, Both Google Docs And MS have good web based options this way, google docs is free up till 15gb of cloud storage,

There is a guy on My Broadband selling Office keys as well. Seems legit.

 

I am still a sucker for Microsoft Office. I was forced to use Google Apps, but was a mess if 4 people worked on one document and no one communicated. Libre Office worked well when I was on Linux, and remember Open Office somewhere in the mix.

 

I am using my Mac more and more these days so it is either MS Office or Pages, Keynote and Numbers.

If you have a Apple ID there is a online version of Pages, Keynote and Numbers as well.
