I think our averages are odd because of our diversity

Zulu women for example have a high rate of obesity, hypertension and stress so they would definitely pull up those ladies BMI's and weights

In the Western Cape ladies have very small feet (average size 4) The Freestate buys a lot of size 9's in ladies

I love trivial factoids

Do you know why women have small feet? So they can stand closer to the sink.

Hat, coat, door... I’m gone before I get flamed for this age old “joke”.

Check the start of the stage for some images of the Millau viaduct, an impressive engineering feat. They will no doubt have some information and trivia to share.

The profile for today seems to have a good chance for the breakaway if they can get a strong group settled. The sprint teams will have a hard time to bring back a large time-gap in the flat-ish section following the final categorised climb. So I would expect the stage hunters to be out in full force. Maybe a day for Thomas De Gendt or Darryl Impey to get involved.

Got a feeling it could be a hectic first hour for the peloton to accept the breakaway composition.

KM 0 is at 13h35...

I dont know.. maybe, I think QS will want to try have Bennett get as close to max points on the line for the green jersey before we head into some difficult stages. Then of course Ewan will be hunting for another stage win.. [emoji2368]

Lanterne Rouge mentioned that Sepp Kuss rode the first 3 hours @128W Avg. That’s 2.1W/kg for him.

I’m not saying these guys aren’t superhuman but I think an average Hubber could have kept up on this stage. Maybe not at 97bpm but still pretty easily.

The average was still 42kph IICR. Have you ever done a race at that pace? I have raced VA and the only race I personally had an average speed over 40 was the emperors and it was only just over 40kph and it wasn't easy by any means.

Fair point, very valid option.

I still think either way the fight for the break will be hectic.

While I hear you, where stats lie is efficiency, positioning and race noise.

The 'average' hubber would cause 500 crashes in most groups riding like that and would definitely have to exert themselves a helluva lot harder to stay with the bunch. They would likely also have to push closer to around 200 watts, some even more, to maintain 2.1w/kg.

Numbers and stats are one thing, but much like bikes, don't really translate back to the 'real' world.

2.1w/kg for 3 hours isn't for kids, especially when one needs to concentrate for those 3 hours as well.

Agreed, there are a whole lot of factors that make someone a pro, not just power numbers.

Perhaps “average hubber” wasn’t accurate but I still think looking at the power data puts that effort more into context than BPM or average speed. Although yes, you still need to be able to sit in the bunch all things considered.
