I don't know how serious the cops in CPT are. They created the 1.0M law, it's up to them to act on the law they created.

I assure you that 90% of TRAFFIC cops DO NOT know about the 1m space bylaw.

I did a bit of research on this about 2 years ago and I went fairly high up on the ranks.

They did not read the gazette !!!

heres I thought I had a few weeks back after a particularly close shave with a car.

I screamed and swore as is the natural reaction to nearly loosing your life, but what if we can stop the motorist, calm ourselves down (easier said than done) and very politely ask the driver for a chat.

Then in as nice a possible way as you can under the circumstances explain to him why you need the extra space when being passed.

Obviously all easier said than done, but if we take the time to educate maybe, just maybe, if the stars and moon aline we can get some change happening

I tried that approach a few times and it does not work either. Nobody like to be showed that he was wrong and they will immediately start defend their actions. First reply would be " I pay for my license and you dont have one so you do not belong on the road"

One dude said that there is no way that he would be slowed down by a cyclist and that he would rather push the cyclist of the road, which he did with me. I regularly cycled with is brother and asked him what if he does that with is brother and killed him, his reply was; Dan is dit maar so, hy hoort nie daar nie.

Personaly I do not think there is anything we can do about bad drivers but to moer them, but that is not worth it. Just smile and wave.

Our biggest problem in SA is that traffic law enforcement is a source of income and not a way to make roads safer. If they focus on making roads safer the mindset of road users might change. Hiding under a tree and at a weigh bridge would not change anything.

After my last incident I sold my roadbike. It is just not worth it anymore.

I had one as well on Rivonia road. Came here to rant and then deleted my draft before posting. Very scary and then trying to not be aggressive to someone who almost just killed me was not easy. Started as well as i think i could have, I asked (told) the lady in the range rover to please give cyclists more space as she passed far too close (closer than you'd ride next to someone in a bunch). Her answer was "but you were riding in the middle of the road" (was passing a runner, and she had another whole lane as it was a double lane section of road). Her response was then what got me shouting at her, but I'm hoping that next time she passes a cyclist she gives a bit more space.

One thing I learned riding up Constantina Nek (yes, I know, rookie error on my part) is that if you give cars any opportunity to pass you they will regardless of your safety. About halfway up I decided to ride in the middle of the lane with traffic backed up around me, and move left when i could see it was safe for them to pass. Yes there were irate drivers passing me, hooting etc, but not one of them passed too close from then on.

So my feeling is that drivers aren't intentionally passing us too closely to endanger us. They just don't understand what is safe passing distance, and when challenged on it often get defensive (a number of reasons for this). So informing drivers personally that they endangered us goes a long way to making us safer. Trying to not be emotional about it during this communication is a bit tricky though.

So then why even come on to this forum and call the driver a d**s, post a picture of him and his number plate?

I am not defending the driver but I do not understand what the OP is trying to achieve.

Like you said, "He's already called out the driver to his face, so the driver is now aware that he passed too close".

So there is a record somewhere that this driver does not care for cyclist.

Go to the police and report this and they will tell you that it is a traffic problem not a police problem

Go to traffic and they will say that unless they see someone do this they can not do much.

I have tried this, and got this response

"you are still alive, so what is your problem" and " i am not going to let some cyclist tell me how to drive, you are not dead so move on"

Correction. WCape is 1.0 m

Typical response I get often. I saw you, or same as OP Idid not hit you.

One needs to be careful as 1m is way less than what one feels on the bike.

Yes do it but be aware of the time wasting and probable non success.

That is why I still say if the road is narrow own the road. i.e. if you feel someone cannot safely pass ride in a position that prevents the person from passing. If they hit you well then you have a case if not you are safe.

It  is very simple.

That is the way you do it. I often ride that route and you will be amazed at what a wave smile and than you can do. To me that is one of the safest roues in cape town. I have never had an issue, unless riding at a stupid time or allowing space to pass where it is not safe to do so.

Maybe we can keep this thread to post all the idiots so there is a proper record if one of them one day cause an cycling accident

Then we can give it to PPA to have more amo when they assist the prosecution to prove the drivers are repeat offenders.

Not cycling related directly but check this D@@5 also.

Me the cyclist, has to go more into the road to miss the pavement, so in the end HE is not 1m from me!!!! See last pic

Solid white line, uphill.

CY 265 - 206 you drive like a BOX

Agree, I have ridden rhodes drive hundreds of time, if you position your bike properly and force the driver to engage their brains its fine.
