Oh, one more thing I left off the original post. If you enable the Veloviewer extension for Google, and you’ve a Strava Premium user, then then tiles show when planning a route. Will post a screenshot from my laptop later.

Here's the route planned for a 9x9 grid... 170Km ride around town. Not as easy as I thought, but should make for a good ride, one day (when it's warmer. Even included a traditional stop as the Seattle Coffee in Melrose Arch.

attachicon.gifCourse builder.PNG

Lovely feature, with 3-4 aimed rides at errand tiles I managed to get my max cluster from 14 to 14 then 17 and now 22, max cluster size creaping nearer à thousand.

Pity I miss lots of data from the older dates, or recent long non GPS rides.

My year max cluster goal is to get it over 1000 and why not aim for 1250. and the 22x22 should definitley go to 25X25 and why not aim for 30.

Its a way to vary rides to get a cluster ride in from time to time makes you discover lovely new road or remember why you never went that way ;)

22x22 is impressive. Nice one!

I’m up to 11x11, and a max cluster of 314, so still have a long way to get to 1000 never mind 1250. I should be able to complete a 25x25 by year end.

It certainly changes the plans on where to ride.m, and take out the usual routes.

out of interest Frosty, how do you plan you're routes ?

I've been watching GCN and the presenters have done some routes etc. and it got me itching to ride different roads.

The thing is, I'll most likely be riding solo, so picking the routes doesnt just need to take road surface, elevation and scenery into account but also my own safety.

I wasn't going to start a new thread for this, but then got typing a rather long post and thought this could be a better option that posting about the latest KOM achieved/lost on Strava. So, with that said, is anyone using the StatsHunters addon (https://www.statshunters.com/) pulls your data from Strava?

Some cool alternative challenges to hunting those KOMs, and getting one to focus on riding, rather than racing, not that racing is wrong:

Badges (General and Location)

I'm sure many of you know about the Eddington number, well, it's here as a badge. I'm currently on level 8/9, so need to get the number up from 81 (miles) to 90 to achieve that badge.

Some Statistics - nothing special here, but wait... there's some more coming

Here's the cool stuff - Explorer Tiles

attachicon.gifScreen Shot 2020-07-02 at 21.31.48.png

The link above is embedded in the image... https://rideeverytile.com/tiles/

When clicking on the Explorer Tiles on Map, it shows this map (below is my worldwide reach, then southern SA). The current world leaderboard is sitting at 101x101. Vereeniging to Pretoria is only 50 blocks high, to put that into perspective for the locals (Vaalies).

The blue blocks are the current Max block, in my case 7x7 that are all stacked together to make a bigger cube/square. I could probably build a bigger block, but that would mean doing a few things, like riding through the townships close by, both on and off road.

So I guess the next step is to get climbing... 3000m in one ride the first of the climbing badges, of which I currently have 2821m as my highest climb on one ride. What is yours?

This is what strava should be doing with all the premium money they been getting instead of giving us nonsense like blog posts, stupid challenges, random time lines, pay wall etc...

Strava is so useless, they have 100's of amazing apps using their API and they come up with nonsense and want to charge for something that was created 5 years ago.

Rant over. I love this stuff and the other API's

As I have been planning club rides for the last 10-11 years, I’ve learnt to find a variety of apps to use, each with their own pros and cons:

Garmin Connect

Ride with GPS

Komoot

Strava

I will post my views on each one tonight, so that you can see the pros and cons for each one.

As for “where to ride”:

When on a ride/race, if I see a road that leads off into the distance, I’ll search the area on Strava/Garmin Connect to see if anyone has an activity on that segment. If it’s popular, then the heat map will show it, and I then check the satellite layer to see if it’s a dirt or tar road.

As for safety, I don’t ride alone - so the rides will be planned with a backup car in mind, unless a gravel/MTB ride.

I normally use komoot with google streetview as a "on the ground" view.

But I'm always still very cautious, time permitting it would be great to drive the route first.

I’m doing a 154Km ride at the end of the month. It touches every “tile” in a 9x9 grid, which means going through a few dodgy areas. I have driven sections of the route on the way home from the office, or going to the office - split over a number of days. This gives me a chance to recheck the route before riding it, and also get to see better options.

Driving it is a luxury I can afford, but within reason. One thing that stands out in my planning is the lack of rides on the Woes Rand.

So here is my route for the end of the month, in Strava:

As I'm planning to ride on every tile possible, I can see where I have been vs. not. The yellow sections are parts of the ride that I've (amazingly) have never touched, while the blue are most often visited, and red less frequent. The non-coloured sections are places still to visit, although Strava is a little behind the game, as I have closed quite a few of the tiles.

Once I've planned a route, then I export the TCX file and import it to both Garmin and Komoot to be able to load onto both my Lezyne and Garmin (acts as my backup).

Thread resurrection, with credit this time to Tim Brink; I noticed this on his Strava timeline, so I linked my Strava account to it and got the following:

Wandrer.earth is a bike exploration game where you win by going places you've never been before.
Discover hidden nooks, earn achievements, and get started on your quest to dominating the roads of your city.

Thanks Tim [emoji471]

The dashboard

Clicking on More Stats —> gives the following

Then clicking on the activity, it shows the different wards and where your ride took you through. A second tool to find those roads you’ve missed before. I figure the blu line is new, and the red line is not. As my history is limited to the last 50 rides, I’ll be getting a lot of “new Km” notifications on my feed.

100% I have no idea why I'm paying for strava when I'm mostly using intervals.icu for analysis...

Edit : woops, didn't realise the post was so old

So we got it up to 28 by 28 by end of august, been of the bike ten days before the holidays with a blocked back.

Went a bit big over last holiday week on a tour, got a about 500 new tiles ;) Not near home though so no real progress in the other stats.
  • Total explorer tiles 2829
  • Max cluster size 744
  • Max square size 20 x 20
