Darko Posted December 3, 2020 Share Hey guys, I need some help. I'm looking at getting the SLX Groupset to upgrade my ride. What I've noticed is that all the groupsets say Micro Spline Not Included. I've searched the forum and I've seen a few options that the guys posted, and I'm none the wiser. What exactly do I need to buy so that I can get the groupset fitted? This? https://bike-addict.co.za/products/dt-swiss-shimano-12-speed-freehub-for-star-ratchet-hubs-microspline?_pos=3&_sid=4f48f26ff&_ss=r Or this: https://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-freewheel-body Or both? Or something else?
Knersboy Posted December 3, 2020 Share It depends on what hub you have, the freehub is hub specific. The Bike addict one is for a DT Swiss hub, the second for a Shimano hub. Edited December 3, 2020 by Knersboy
PappaWatTrap Posted December 3, 2020 Share Step 1: Find out what hub you have on your bike. Step 2: Get the microspline freehub that fits on that hub (freehub can usually be changed on a hub). Step 3: If step 2 isn't possible, get a entry level Shimano microspline hub and rebuild your rear wheel. You can get a Shimano microspline hub for about R700 if I'm not wrong. That is the MT410 of MT401 HUB. Grease_Monkey and TheoG
Darko Posted December 3, 2020 Share Step 1: Find out what hub you have on your bike. How do I find that out? Take the wheel off and pull it out, or is it easily readable while the wheel is still on?
Darko Posted December 3, 2020 Share Google is your friend here. The meaning is there. Sorry I can't help more than that. I've tried. No answer is clear.
DR ◣◢ Posted December 3, 2020 Share The hub should have a brand name on it. Alternatively look at what brand of rim it is. Sometimes a wheel set can help to identify it.
s14phoenix Posted December 4, 2020 Share Or ask someone or post a pic and ask the bikehub
Jewbacca Posted December 4, 2020 Share Is your hub not branded? What wheel set do you have? If they are after market, any wheel builder worth their salt would have the valve pointing straight at the makers mark......
TCTG Posted December 4, 2020 Share Or ask someone or post a pic and ask the bikehubUsually the LBS will assist and guide you because they will be fitting it for you by the looks of what you said..."non the wiser"
Darko Posted December 4, 2020 Share Yeah, I'm a serial noob with mechanics and DIY in general. Inherited the bike, so just finding my way around it slowly. I checked, and they're Bontranger hubs. I unfortunately don't have the cassette removal tool so I can't check out the actual hub body. The cassette seems like a standard Shimano 2x something. TheoG Posted December 4, 2020 Share Maybe best to go to a LBS to at least tell you what you got and then go from there. You will probably have a Shimano HG freebody at the moment that needs to be replaced with a microspline freebody (for your specific hub), if you want to go 12 speed. You only need a microspline freebody if you want to go to 12 speed. If 11 speed is good enough, you only need to buy a new cassette and shifter, nothing else. Post some photos and we also might be able to point you in the right direction. Edit: Sorry, you can also go 12sp on HG freebody but with a 11 tooth smallest cog and not 10 like on microspline. Basically proper 12sp vs more economical 12sp. Edited December 4, 2020 by Theog

Darko Posted December 4, 2020 Share Sorry gents, I don't mean to be cryptic. The bike is a Pyga OneTen. It's been loaned to me for the foreseeable future. The parts that are currently on it are from a Titan I believe. Not sure which one. As I'm really enjoying the bike, I wanted to take advantage of some Black Friday specials. I bought a new brake set and discs. I got a handle bar combo from Lyne. And now I'm looking at the groupset as the one on CWC is well priced at R4399 (Shimano SLX). Darko Posted December 4, 2020 Share Some might recall that I had issues with fading brakes and my lever basically touching my bar when I was trying to stop. So this is me just bringing this bike up to scratch and giving it a fix up so I can enjoy it for some time.
DR ◣◢ Posted December 4, 2020 Share I believe those wheels to be from a Trek. May be a DT240 or proprietary body. A Trek dealer should be able to help. Their concept store is in Melrose Arch Jhb and I think Dunkeld Cycles is one as well. Darko
