I suspect VDP would have crashed dropper or not - he really messed up on that one. As for Gaze, he does seem to have his share of bad crashes. Always does a proper job.

I think he was being slack with regards to track prep. He was the only 1 who was unaware of the drop being changed for the race. He thought there would be a bridge behind the drop so he thought a dropper is not needed. Yet I suspect he might have made the drop if he had a dropper, the high seat just threw his wait forward enough.

Gaze and MvP both have great mtb skills, but they seem to be prone to mistakes or lack of constant concertation. MvP`s fall at the Olympics was also 1 of those bad lack of concertation falls. That course required a dropper for that drop and he had no dropper and so over the bars he went.

They don't spend enough time on their mountain bikes.

MVDP arrived in Tokyo three days before the event. Pidcock had been there two prior and was riding the course at every opportunity allowed. When MVDP arrived he thought he was going to get a lot of assistance from his team mates and didn't. None of them were going to give him an edge by helping him do his homework. So he had minimal course practice then missed race briefing as well and the  course notes where they were told the bridge would not be there. So all onhim really (which he accepted).

Gaze accident was weird. It looked like he hesitated on the jump then pulled too hard on the bar and pushed his weight too far back, bike was leaning right when it landed and he became a passenger. I think he was just unsighted by the riders ahead and got his timing wrong

So I think it is good that N1no won, a true 100% mtbiker who is dedicated to mtb only. Respect! N1no also had his moments, but I think it was always those Aspen tyres loosing grip on corners or else being rammed by Fluckiger which I think was the result of N1no barging his way through in last year`s WC. I just don`t see N1no ever going down like Gaze and MvP does.

That I think was also due to tyre slipping around the wet grass off camber corner into the bridge. He had the skills to correct being off balance on the bridge but just not quite enough, at the top his he was still too much to the left. If it was me I would have went into the side of the bridge at the bottom or I probably would have fell on the corner.

Aspens are my favourite fast tyre but I do not have the skills to not fall with 1 on the front. An aspen is a ski slope with 0 grip so it is a fitting name for the tyre. I don`t think Maxxis have a good racing front tyre especially where a bit more grip is needed, N1no can make it work but sometimes he goes down due to a lack of grip.

from https://www.xcodata.com/rider/nino-schurter/

2008 he was 22 and sneaked an olympic bronze. he now has the full set of olympic medals and the worst one too(4th).

since 2010, he has basically made the podium or better at something like 85% of the races he does. phenomenal.

not a Nino fanboy, but credit where it is due. he's been at the top for a long time now.

this quote from Absolon credit at the Mountain bike hall of fame takes it back almost 10 years.

https://mmbhof.org/julien-absalon/

Bicycles were also evolving rapidly. Julien switched to 29 inch wheels to tackle rougher courses, which extended his winning streak until young Nino Schurter arrived on the scene. Schurter would not match Absalon’s athleticism until later, but his bike-handling skills were next level. Julien responded quickly:

In 2013, Nino Schurter sometimes, well, actually, a lot of times, beat me in the downhills. That’s how he won three or four races, so I decided I could not continue like this. I trained hard in the winter with lots of BMX training and riding enduro bikes with my brother Remy. In 2014, it was a different story. I could push Nino to the limit on the downhills. Nino had trained hard on the uphills, however, so all of a sudden I had to work hard on the climbs. We were really, really close that year. In Hafjell, I won the World Championships title, thanks to my work with my brother.”

Epic battles ensued between the Frenchman and the Swiss, and for two seasons, elite cross country racing was a two-man show. Nino, however, was six years younger and a rising star, Julien was at his apogee. Time was not on his side, but technology was. Absalon embraced simpler, one-by drivetrains, began using a dropper seatpost, and was one of the first top-ranked cross country athletes to compete successfully on a dual-suspension bike. He admitted:

Without Nino, I would not have continued in the way I did until now. He gave me motivation, a lot. It was interesting, and it pushed me to work harder and try to beat him. It felt so good when I managed to beat him, and I think it was the same for him. It was a huge motivator, which was important.”

I watched a replay of the mens race sans commentary. The Gaze accident was quite unfortunate. He was unsighted by Sarrou and hence slightly off line . His rear wheel slipped on a rock went sent the bike left but his body was wanting to go straight. When he landed, on the fron t wheel , he went down hard into the crowd
