This is such an awesome thread, you are so privileged to ride with your son.

My boy and I started riding together in 2017, he was 8, looking at his strava, we never went further than 13km

The year after that he competed in a couple of 20km Trailseekers, got his first win too. We never went further than 35km that year

Now he is 13, we did our first 947 together 3h15, he fell in love with the race. We also did our first stage race this past weekend at Sondela, we came 2nd in the parent and child category. He was fine on stage 2, except for the last 20km, but he cruised through stages 1 and 3.

Now we enter events together, and he joins me on training rides. My only advice is to make sure to keep it as fun as possible and dont push them too hard

You think it's worth giving him garmin. I'm looking at changing from my 500 to something newer maybe.

My son had a TomTom and then a Suunto and then a Garmin Forerunner 45. He has managed to break the TomTom and lose the Garmin. He also has a Garmin Edge 130 that I look after. He currently rides a carbon hardtail with GX AXS and Roval Control wheels to try and keep the weight as low as possible

I put a 130 on Maritz's bike early on.  Nice to track his miles and his progres.

We went to the skatepark over the weekend but I think he might have been a bit intimidated by the sounds or the people. We had fun riding around the Radio controlled car track and then went for a walk on a little bush path. I'm thinking of getting a bmx for the park as my bike does not play nice there, maybe if he sees me riding there he won't feel as intimidated.

One thing I can add is our son had an Avalanche Antix (20inch) which is a single speed bicyle. Basic bicycle which has a rigid fork and V-brakes but the deal breaker is the single speed setup which is geared very high. It was fine on the road but made it difficult for him to get going as the first pedal is tough, add to that trying to get your other foot onto the pedal while having enough momentum and that adds up to plenty of falls. Especially if the road is even slightly inclined.
We sold the Antix at a huge loss to buy a used Titan which was a significant upgrade. Disc brakes (cable not hydraulic), front fork (more for bragging rights) and a 7speed gearset with twist grip. I have not yet taught him shifting but it is nice putting into a lower gear and letting him ride more comfortably.
Even built a ramp we can set up on grass, that he loves> "Dad lets hit the ramp again please...."

I took my 4 y.o. to Bloemendal on Saturday to ride the pump track on her balance bike. She really enjoyed it to the extent that on Sunday she asked me if we can go again. I decided to rather take her for a ride on a walkway we have winding between the homes where we stay. She was on her bike and I was on mine just riding along.

That was such a proud moment for me. I think it was probably the most special biking memory for me.

Yesterday afternoon she came bursting into my office insisting that we go again. I was in the middle of a meeting then, but today after work we're definitely going again. The look on her face was enough to melt hearts when I said we're going riding today.

That is the toughest part, finding the time to go cycling whenever they want to.
We are pretty much bound to weekends only, just no way around working till 5pm and then needing to cook, bath, etc. Sucks, but thats life.

I changed the shifter to click type. But a cheap one. I want to look for a decent one. It pushes hard. I'm letting him learn gears from day one. It's tough now but I'm coaching him as we go on the flats. But it's basically 1/6

Need to change the title to Dad and Child for those of us who have daughters to deal with. :)

We have boys, even the animal children are boys, sometimes I wish for a girl...to have change in who can pee the highest.
