What is the benefit of a formal club?

For me personally - after more of a decade of cycling I managed to get into a DC team with people of similar abilities & goals. Just would have never happened with my usual cycling buddies.

More options for weekend rides, now I know more peeps with similar ability that are options to ride with

Our club linked to a shop so I get a decent discount on smaller cycling purchases.

The CSA requirement to belong to a club.

Discounts on races & occasional free kit

Belonging to a formal club not for everybody but worked out quite well for me.

start what ?

Start riding with a group.?

Clubs would generally provide that opportunity when others are not available.

bike shops are good place to start.

Or just ride your bike. Soon enough you'll meet up with another cyclist, have a chat whilst you ride together. You'll find people to ride with.

To quote an earlier post: "Southern suburbs and Town are clicky"

The idea of "just ride your bike" is possibly also one of the barriers to cycling currently with safety concerns around being solo on the road.

Some people are pretty open just need to message them.

It's clique.... Not click ... #oldmanwasanenglishteacher

Agreed. But I felt no need to correct the poster as the attitudes are apparently the same in both groups. 🤣

This isn't rocket science. Just get on the bike and ride. Sooner or later, you'll be in the slip, or someone will be in your slip. Most live happily ever after. As for our fallen buddies, RIP.

There are reasons already mentioned why some may not just get on a bike, and would prefer to subscribe to an organized group/club instead.

That said, I'm no stranger to just riding and getting in the slip ... but I've also had many rides where it seems everybody is going the opposite direction. 🙈
