Good morning. During a short session practicing hops in the street in front of my house I inadvertently performed a trick which involved skidding along the tar on my palms. As a recent convert to MTB from trail running, I was fortunately wearing a pair of running gloves which now have extra ventilation in the palms, but did prevent more of my skin becoming part of the road surface.

So now I want to do the right thing and get a proper pair of gloves. I plan to ride a lot at Helderberg Farm, Jonkers, Grabouw, and my priorities are protection, comfort, warmth, in that order. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I got some gloves from a Hubber by the name of Jarrod a few years back.

Did a good few thousand km and were going good until Trans Augrabies ...

. Day two a thorn tree ripped the one glove.

. Day three I had one of those classic 0km/h tumbles ... tore the other glove on a rock.

Got back and ordered two more sets from Jarrod

I have sent Jarrod a message pointing him to this thread.

Ive been quite impressed with Giro's MTB gloves. The last pair is coming to the end of its life after about two years and a few slides down the trail. Leat are also quite good but on previous versions, the thin lycra between the fingers wore out before the palms or uppers. Moto X gloves can also be good value but lack the snot wipe facility on the thumb.

What do these look like for interest

These are "single layer" gloves, ie no padding.

I prefer this "feel"

Nice grip finish on the grips.

Those look great for winter, how do they play with phone touch screens?

Cost on these?

I have been super impressed with these. Got them from bike addict. For the amount of riding I do I am satisfied.

+1 for the Ciovita ones
I see that they about the same as the Giro Bravo long finger gloves, but with no fiddly velcro straps that dont work after a while.
Also, they have no padding on the palms, which I prefer.

I can answer calls and take photos with the gloves on .... lick the tip of the glove 🙈

I use finger print to use the phone, so the gloves come off.

Temperature wise ... at 4 degrees it certainly is cold, but our temps soon rise.  I have used it to mid 20's.  (After Augrabies I may rethink my habit of riding without gloves in hot weather ...)

Old price was just short of R400 a pair.  Discount if you take three pairs.

Have bought a lot of pairs of Leatts and have to say I am really disappointed in the quality recently. My oldest pair (2018) are still going strong (look a bit old but still trucking). My latest pair are falling apart (2022).

Switched to Hirzl Grippp - got them on sale in Europe and they are so far really comfy but only had them a few months, so can't comment on longevity.

I wash my gloves by hand in the shower post ride. I have found the washing machine eats them for breakfast.
