So you can just…throw in the canal?

I’ve seen many, many bikes locked to guard rails, and look like they’re part of the furniture; last used in the last century.

I used to live there. They clean up around 15,000 bikes per year on average from the canal. It's seen as a big problem, but bikes aren't the only things they find in the canals. They attribute it to stolen bikes, vandalism and accidents.

You'll notice most of those pulled out are oma-fiets or stadsfiets, which are the most popular bikes used for commuting.

If you go to the Algarve in Portugal you will find many bikes locked to Fences.

Rich Tourist buys a reasonably price bike and rides it for a month the does a selfish thing like that.

Could just give it to a Local.

You cannot take it because it's locked. Just Sits there and rusts.

Usually the saddle is missing.

as it was described to me by the amsterdam walking tour guide - "the sound of a bicycle landing in a canal is very exciting to a drunk amsterdammer, they just can't get enough of it!"

plenty of dutch bikes ended up in stellenbosch when maties first rolled out their bike rental program - they get refurbished and sent around the world to ngo/charities.

🤣 You may be right, drunk people can do peculiar things sometimes. It reminds me of my university days.

Good to hear there are programmes in place now to refurbish and recycle the recovered bikes and put them to good use. To my knowledge, at least when I was there, there was nothing formal like that in place.
