And 1A looks like over 400 to me! Could it just be that the organisers are trying to cram a larger field into the same starting window so that the 42km route can start at 10?

Yes they need to pack more riders in as there are fewer start groups basis the poor initial uptake of entries. Entires accelerated through January and then the tour de ppa has gifted many a higher starting group than they would otherwise have. Multiple factors all DK tributing toward what is going to be a high stress ride on sunday

Or simply don't. Drop back to a less stressful start time. Enjoy the vibe and scenery 😉

I'll go back to my drum circle now.

Don't forget your Jesus sandles on the way out😂

They must have their own limits on max start group size(300?), if it gets too big then they need to shift the bellcurve. If you fall out of the new criteria then you get an email and are dropped down a group.

I'm guessing they could reseed the starting groups in 10minutes. but to reprint info for the people moved bumped down a group would probably need an extra column and two macros and possibly break the excel spreadsheet this whole thing is run on..

What I do seem to notice is that there seems to be a welcome but unexpected increase in entry numbers; is this mainly related to the good weather of 2023? A bit of breeze on sunday and the trend will return to normal as people recall their warstories of 2009 and 2015 (i forget the exact windy years).

Check out the stats and I think you may be right.

https://results.finishtime.co.za/Stats.aspx?CId=35&RId=4464

the biggest groups are 40-49 and 50-59

the age groups with disposable income and have the most invested in the glory years.

i do t see this upsurge in entries as a signal that the cycling events industry has turned a corner, more that many have become re acclimatised to getting less for more ( remember still no title sponsor)

we did have great weather in 2023 but I think those with memory of years past will realise that the weather is a lottery and everyone either wins or loses. I think there’s just a craving for some normality and therefore doing familiar things is in fashion

Think you might find plenty of the 1358 elites are in the 30-39 age cat too.

Massive respect to the ballie in the 90-94 category!

Exactly what I was thinking .....

Maybe they got caught off guard with the increase in umbers.

Cant start the 42km much later, as they also need to finish before the roads must be opened ....

And yet a number of stage races cant attract enough numbers to keep events viable.

The numbers at Winelands, 99er and now CTCT seems to go against the common perception.

Maybe time for the organisers to have another look at which events draws the numbers.  Certainly a fickle market ....

GOOD to see the increase in numbers

GOOD to see the increase in numbers

R800 for a one day event vs crazy entry fees + accomodation+ bike service packages at stage races…..

two vastly different markets.

What I’d like to see is stats on nationalities that have entered ctct. Were having a bumper tourist season

roughly 1728 international entries this year. I don’t have a chassis of comparison though ( against previous years)

Similarly, would like to see the numbers for those traveling from Gauteng and similar, also with all the travel and accommodation costs.

What do these figures look like over the last 10 odd years ?

Hiehie .. we love watching the numbers, part of our training.  Pity we dont have access to enough data to see the larger picture.
