I tried to warn you about those climbs and a loaded bike but it's something you need to experience yourself to truly appreciate 😉😅

🤣 you did! and it echoed round in my head for hours!, I gave them a good go though!! Next time, maybe..! Actually want to come your way and try some of what that area has to offer, with lessons learned and a honed gear list!

The Cederberg's climbs are truly "next level". I've done then numerous times before on tours and each time I still seem to be caught by surprise on just how challenging they prove to be... or maybe it's because I'm just getting older 😊

Have you done the Plett 2 CT Cape Cycle Route yet? I can strongly recommend adding that to your "To Do" list. Longer than the Cederberg but less challenging terrain and absolutely stunning scenery.

I've been told about this route, is it the Cross Cape?

Do you see that as a positive thing? Would you travel to the world champs if you qualified?

Yes it’s positive as it might attract international entrants and it also raises the profile of the event. I would not travel if I qualified due to financial reasons at this moment but it would be nice to have a uci medal in my collection.

Almost R 2400 per entry now that early bird has sold out. Didn’t even realise there was limited spots. Is this price normal or is this just because of the UCI designation now?

Second question, is this route worth that entry fee?

Did the race last year - loved the route, both beautiful and properly challenging. Venue had a real lekker vibe. Waterpoints were well stocked.

That said, no I don't think this or any other gravel 100 miler I have done over the past year is quite worth R2,400 yet.

Last year the race organisers seemingly also controlled the accommodation at the (previous) venue and it was a proper rip-off. Something like R1k per night for a campsite if I remember correctly.

New venue this year so possibly the deal will be different and accommodation will be more affordable.

So I have mixed feelings about this event, not really fussed about the UCI thing but I want to give the gravel series a go again - will only do it if it is part of the gravel series.

Ronde van Swartberg the week earlier on the other hand, got the early bird entry for R1K cheaper than this race and will support it whether its part of the series or not

It’s definitely a pretty different race from what it originated as. I will miss the 245 dearly, it would be cool if we still had a 245 option in October.

As far as I understand, It’s basically the same route as the 140 this year. That stretch from the top of uitkyk to the low level bridge is pretty rough and they were doing road works last year. So hopefully they have finished those road works and the road has been graded as that’s now included in both directions on the route. And the descent without road closures and with construction vehicles probably won’t be so fun. I’m not sure what the road closure situation is there though.

No, it was always a rip off. For a race where you can barely get you bottles refilled at the WP when you get there in 5th place, and no water at the finish on a 40+° day. Hope they do better this year for the peeps who'll attend

I see the Prince George normal entry fee is not much less. I entered with the Black Friday deal, a big discount!
At these full-price entry fees, one will have to be rather picky, and be on the lookout for race reports from previous years, especially if you have to add accommodation as well.
At least for Ronde van Swartberg and Prince George I could just drive through very very early the morning of the event.
The entry fee for Around The Pot seems quite cheap, relatively speaking?

If you compare pricing to other gravel events, organisers are definitely milking the whole gravel thing. They’re all north of R 1,000. This one definitely the priciest of the lot especially if you missed the early bird.

Compare this to pure mtb events like Trailseeker series as an example, you’re looking at under R500 an entry. So much more value there. Just confusing to me as to why gravel is so much more.

Yeah I’m also trying to pick and choose now. Would honestly love to do more but with that price i cant justify spending so much.

Unfortunately I am planning holiday during Around the Pot so that one is out for this year otherwise I’d have most likely done that.

At the moment, I’m trying to decide between The Ceder or Race to the Sea. Initially the plan was to do both but seriously R 2,400 an entry plus petrol and accommodation. Looks like it’s either or for this year. Any suggestions from those who have done both would be appreciated.

For me both are great (but very different) routes, R2C would be better value for money, entry fee last year was R1450 which included a t-shirt if I remember correctly and if you live in CPT accomodation not an issue, only snag is organising a lift back from Onrus. Also the food & beer at the finishing venue were ridiculously overpriced so we didn't hang around for long afterwards

Would you like to retract your previous support of the UCI accreditation 😂

Race organizers have to pay the UCI for accreditation. More accurately the people that enter these races are the ones that are paying that bill.

if there is prize money the people that enter these races are paying for the prize money if there is no major title sponsor

The Cedar costs about R5,000 to enter once you pay the entry and R2,000 camping fees plus transport. For that price you could enter 5 gravel events within a few hours drive from Cape Town and arrive on race morning
