Ride to Tokai, ride up to the mast or up to lookout point above Silvermine. Trails back down for some fun ....

Silvermine looks good.  A good stretch target I think would be Newlands to Silvermine, then finish off with the mast.  Let's see.

Thanks!

Not at threshold….high tempo to sub threshold. After two intervals go and do a flat zone 2 ride for 40 min then repeat.

where is your vo2max currently?

Thank you.  Re Paarl mountain, do you have any routes you could share for safe gravel roads with climbs?  And to I need a permit for this please?

Many thanks

Adrian

It’s actually super at the moment as a lot of the jeep tracks were graded for the Epic. So super straight forward you can head up either northern or southern side of Paarl to get onto Jan Phillips drive and then you get to a turn to head up into the reserve. If you stick on the jeep track you won’t need a permit, but if you plan on hitting any of the single tracks in the mountain then you would need one. For the best climbing you can start at Frater square, then head up the road to the Taal monument and get on Jan Philips drive from there. Could look something like this, but you could add on by heading to paarl rock as well. https://strava.app.link/ydwx3I7S3Rb

Most of Paarl gravel roads and then a bit of tar to link up to the other side of the valley and back to Paarl. No permit needed for this route.

This ride I started from Diemersfontein.

I live in Tokai and if you ride from Tokai Bootleggers up to the Mast and as you come back down, you continue through to Silvermine gate and do a loop around the entire reserve. Back down Tokai via the single track to exit the gate.

That in itself will give you very close to 50km with 1500m elevation and as you exit Tokai trails and get to the first stop sign, you take a right and ride up Zwaanswyk road for an extra 200m elevation in 2km.

Tokai Permit will set you back around R100 (maybe more by now) for a day pass and will give you access to Silvermine as well, unless you want to have a Nic Dlamini situation (couldn't resist :) )

Another lekker ride from the South is from Tokai Bootleggers through the Greenbelt network up to the top of Southern Cross drive at Constantia Nek and ride the path over Kirstenbosch and drop down into Newlands forest. From here up Rhodes Memorial (check for muggers) and make your way to Queen's Blockhouse.

Park your car at Table Mountain and do this route as given in reverse and then back to your car and you will be in for an EPIC day on the bike.
