part of my cycling group is a guy who rides an e-bike for medical reasons, he did not start with us as there was apparently an e-bike start batch, even he was saying how he did not like the fact that these unrestricted e-bikes with spare batteries were passing him with ease whilst he put the work in.

This seems to be the norm now, just seems to be glorified moto biking at this stage.

look, with the dwindling entries into the event its probably not a bad thing to let them enter, keeps the numbers up.

Another observation was the amount of E-Bikes in the batches. There were two guys which were next to me and had some interesting mods to have two batteries which seems to be permanently mounted on the bike and then connected to the wiring. Did not look further but suspect that they might have a switch over mechanism to the second battery without the need to stop and change batteries.

Another interesting observation was the number of riders with extra batteries on their backpacks.

Did you report this to the relevant authorities?

What is the thing with the number boards?
For a lot of people these were removed at the finish, but then there were plenty on bicycles loaded on cars leaving the venue.
What gives?

But this in itself is worth all the pain on the day! Such a happy kid who felt like WE DID IT.

Thanks for the heads up .... :P

Every so often I do longer rides with friends .... an eyeopener when they are battling on those hills back into Durbanville and an e-biker flies past fresh as a daisy .....

@JJDT did these extra batteries look like oversized battery bottles ?  Lots of e-bikes are now sold with relatively small batteries, with the design to add these "water-bottle" batteries in the frame plugged into the system.  Looking at the battery use, you may well need two of these extra batteries for these longer road events.  Very costly setup.  (purely talking about the batteries, not IF these bikes were de-restricted ....)

@RobynE 🚵‍♀️ & @NotSoBigBen .... sadly the few spoiling it for the rest .... you may well enjoy my braaifire talk about some of these moto-racers ....

@The Ouzo ..... I had a similar experience on Suikerbossie this year.  I stopped in Houtbay, at Seattle for coffee (history to this habit), reasonably fresh battery ... So I was doing a fair speed up Suikerbossie, just slow enough not to upset @RobynE 🚵‍♀️  ..... next moment a lady on Trek comes past at more than 30km/h .... few seconds later a gent came flying past as if he was trying to catch up, shouting abuse to one and all that dared obstruct his way ..... THIS flicked my switch !!  Full boost, three hard kicks, had a short talk to him about proper cycling behaviour .... joining these rides on an e-bike is a privaledge, dont spoil it for everybody !!!

de-restricted e-bikes .... pretty sure my thoughts on this is well documented .... go ENJOY it on your own.  There are clear rules for these rides, if for nothing else, for the safety of ALL riders.  Time and a place for everything ....

🚨Sharing footage from A Batch which was FLYING

That crashed on the highway looked bad! Distracted me so much that I lost the bunch and had to work to get back on.

Video is evident why it was so hard (title is accurate), you guys were busy! Thanks for sharing

I know it’s on me and only on me but my word it’s soul-crushing when you’re fighting for your life on a hill and someone ziiings past you on e-bike having a nice Sunday outing 😂 😭

Burns my @$$ when a fit person flies past me on an e bike. I saw a few okes pushing their spouse/buddy on an Amish bike at speed. Also saw someone on a full TT bike. Thought they weren't permitted?
