I see mails speaking of parking areas with associated colours etc. I see no such thing. Even the mail I received refers to a video for venue info etc that when you click on it does not even exist. I am struggling to get info.  I assume coming from Pta one needs to take Ben Naude Dr as N17 will be closed by 5AM. I also assume we need to be in our starting pens about 30-45mins beforehand?

All info is in the Riders Guide linked in said email and whatsapp sent with your start batch and times.. https://ridejoburg.co.za/documents/Riders_Guide-25.pdf

So nice of them to take back the race numbers from Lynnwood at 1pm before I could collect. Maybe that could also have been communicated on the whatsapp as well FFS.

They actually did mention it in the riders guide document, albeit in very fine print

I would absolutely miss that as well.

How? It’s in the boldest text in the main part, I even picked up on my phone and managed to avoid the inconvenience.

So how did everyone get on? Kiddo and I managed to finish on the tandem. It was brutal out there 🥵 🔥 😵 Saw lots and lots of sweepees.

Not a fark am I ever attempting those hills with a 39t ring/34t cassette as my granny gear on the tandem, ever again.

9km from the finish I discovered some porridge in my rear tyre. Unfortunately it cost me some time. Amazing how a lost 10 minutes can change a race from okay-ish to very ho-hum

I had a hysterical moment on Hyde park were both my thighs were cramping, I was desperately trying to unclip and get my feet onto the ground.. I then had to stay dead still for about 5 minutes, one move and I would have been on the ground crying.. made the mistake of trying to clear some sweat and just rubbed it and sun cream straight into my eyes.🤣🤣. lost time but finished in about 4 hours with my friend.🥳👍🏻

Unfortunately had to call it quits going through Bryanston.

The puncture guards were not on my side.

Front tire Punctured 12 kays in. Fixed in a record 3 mins.

Kyalami, front wheel flat again. Second fix

Going up past Lonehill, flat again. Last bomb

Managed to limp to Bryanston.

Will need to strip the wheel and do a post race check.

We were by far the slowest tandem on the day 😂 but we finished within the time.

Was very pleased with how the tandem went overall, but need to make a drastic change to the gearing if we’ll have any chance at all of riding the long hills. I would have suffered a bit on a single bike on Jan Smuts but the tandem was impossible. My kiddo was really trying, too! So definitely not a case of her being a passenger. Vintage Shimano Sora 2x8 just doesn’t cut it unfortunately.

We had some bloody epic descents though - I forgot to record my ride so not sure what speeds we were doing but it was like we were shot from a cannon, sailing past single riders. The descents were flippen awesome.

The bike felt super stable and everything worked. We did stop on the M2 bridge to inflate the rear tyre a bit so suspect we may have picked something up but it sealed itself. A nice guy came past us and said the rear needs a bit of air as we hadn’t noticed.

We had a Maxxis Rambler 45 up front and a Schwalbe G-One 38 at the rear. And our cheap Temu saddles 💯 did the job of keeping us comfy. Neither of us had any butt pain at all which is a first!

Hats off to everyone who gave it their best whether finished or not.

There was a big crash on the M2 in F group behind me, I hope all is OK.

Not sure if this is related, but what happened to the two guys that fell badly at about 30km out? I saw them lying on the road being attended to. This was about 07:00, couldn't have been group F?

I saw that, that was after the crash, looked very serious.

I think the heat got the better of alot of people, plenty people cramping.

I felt it wasnt as well put together as previous events. There was one area where they had a water point on the left, and cones on the right over an expansion joint, forcing riders into a single lane on the left past a water point. When I went past I still thought to myself there is a disaster waiting to happen, because faster riders want to stay right and avoid the congestion at the water point.

Well it turns out at least one person fell victim to that, a mate of mine was not able to pull left in time, went between the cones, tried to bunny hop the expansion joint but it clipped the rear, sent him flying and slashed his rear tyre.

This want the only dodge thing, at another point there was a bricked wrapped in red and white barrier tape in the middle of the road indicating a hole, you could not see this from a distance.

The short route riders mixing it up with the long route guys from town was also a mess, these guys were riding all over the show, stopping in the middle of the road etc.

My race went OK. I started with my team and our goal was sub 3h30, we were very slow getting onto the highway, so 2 of us went upahead and pushed the pace up slightly, had a decent bunch going until woodmead where all the wheelsuckers crowded past us on the descent to kyalami.

As I'm still suffering PTSD in the middle of large bunches at high speed I backed off and let the all go, passed most of them on the climb into Kyalami.

Once I turned off of Witkoppen my legs decided they did not feel like continuing, so it was a slow slog up the hills from there. With the heat my HR would not stay down so I stopped a few times, caught my breathe and continued. Even standing around after the finish my HR hovered around 130bpm and would not come down. Heat and dehydration.

I'm happy with the 3h21 I did, this being my 21st 947 I was not to concerned about getting a PB.

Well done @Dexter-morgan for your sub 3, great effort.
