there should be quite a few CCTV camera's in that road? quite a few new and old businesses there... not sure the newlands cricket ground might have ?

...this is concerning as this road frequented by me and alot of the guys in my riding groups

Sorry that you had to go through this. A question though, was it you were knocked down accidentally and then it was too good pass up taking the bike, or do you think you were knocked down deliberately?

This was shared on a WhatsApp group.

The taxi has a very distinctive engine noise and when I saw them pull over outside Grootte Schuur Primary school I actually thought they had a breakdown. When I heard it behind me minutes later I knew something was gonna go down. I expected them to pull in front of me and jump out to take the bike, they chose to hit me from behind, just hard enough to have a proper fall and give them enough time to load the bike. They told me to get into the van but I refused and they then took off. Very grateful that they decided the bike was enough for them.

The one that jumped out appologised profusedly, kept on saying sorry but wouldnt look at me and never once asked if I was okay. When I told him I'm okay give met bike he just kept on saying get in, get in and I then started moving away from the vehicle for fear that he would shove me. He was never aggressive and but you never know what could have happened if I were naive enough to get in.

Terrible - with adrenaline pumping it is hard to keep one's wits about you - that's useful information because in those circumstances I think I might have wanted to believe the apologetic demeanor

Did it almost sound like the engine was going to blow up? Very loud but not a like a loud exhaust?

One of my fears when I'm aware of a taxi approaching from the back.. So sorry this happened to you, glad you came off 'lightly'. One of the reasons I will not come work and live in the Southern subs.. Not oblivious to the fact this could easily happen here in the North too, bit seems bike jacking and traffic/bike incidents seem to be more frequent on the Town/South side. I hope these sh¡tty 'humans' get what's coming to them and you get your bike back!

You're honestly scared of the southern suburbs because of the incredible rate of bike jackings?

Would love to hear the other reasons (there are places stocking Joey's so you can tick that one of your list).

@ShebeenNot quite sure what you mean by 'places stocking Joey's'? Also what you wish to achieve with your line of 'conversation'.. I didn't say I'm scared of the Southern Suburbs, I do ride there and in town, but I don't wish to live there due to high crime rates, and the more often you put yourself out there the higher your chance of falling victim. Other reasons, are you assuming other thoughts on my behalf? That's all there is to it, it's more unsafe, lots of the roads are not in good shape and there's lots of sections where there's not really space for cyclists. Have a good day, and try pick a fight somewhere else
