Good Day All,

They say, with age, comes wisdom, unfortunately, also dwindling eyesight.

Need some advise and suggestions for prescription glasses for riding.

What suggestions and what to avoid?

Thanks.

I went down this road and ended up using contact lenses, much more versatile

Most good sunglasses have the inserts that you have to clip in, you give these inserts to the optician and they make lenses, I've not tried these but that was my initial plan

I have an expensive pair of prescription glasses from torga optical that I've been very happy with.

They need updating but its a big outlay.

Might investigate the clip on route but i do need multi/varifocals and dont know if clip ons can do that.

Interested to read experience of others.

I have a 2 pairs of prescription glasses now for over 8 years. One with a very dark tint (photo) and the other much lighter. I wear them not only for cycling. Works like a dream. Not so expensive as normal cycling glasses. Had them made them made my local optometrist

On a different, but related note; Wife bought me a set of affordable yet decent sunglasses with built in READERS (x2.0), which have been a game-changer…

…now not needing to haul readers along whilst cycling, for Garmin head unit as well as cellphone reading during coffee stop(s).

Yeah, Ive got prescription sunglasses and they aren't cheap, but those are for normal out and about wear. Those cost me R5k

I've looked at a few options, but obviously, its the cost thats crazy, especially for the wrap around glasses.

I think this may be a route I need to explore.

My vision is only minorly impaired but I’d never bought myself a pair of oakleys for this reason. Saved up for a while and got me a pair of jawbreakers with prescription lenses inserted in the middle, done by Oakley. IIRC they can do this to the EV Radar Path too. I paid around 7000 in 2024 for this.  Still going well although the tinting on a couple of the lenses has worn slightly.

I have these, but sweat gets between the lenses and is very annoying. So I ride with contact lenses. Much better.

Have a look at the offerings at Tyler Optics. I got myself these, which I am very satisfied with. https://tyleroptix.co.za/product/to96-black-yellow-bifocal-sports-sunglasses/

They also offer stick on lenses to convert your own regular use glasses to accommodate your dwindling eyesight.

I unfortunately have to get myself some new glasses, I recently lost them when I took them off at the bridge below the Vaal Barrage and put them on the railing. A truck speeding past created a big draft which the blew it off into the Vaal river. Somewhere in the Vaal  there probably is a barbel looking quite cool.😎

So an update, what I've found so far.

Most shops or opticians that Ive been too so far, just dont have a great range of stock to try on.

However, I think I may explore the contact lens route, as it seems the most economical  route🤔  Just need to be able to get the lenses in my eyes first. That was an issue I had 25 years ago and why I only wear glasses.

The search continues.

Have a look at a site called www.tendaglasses.com.

Like temu but for perscription glasses, custom made to your script.

They will make you a set of persceription glasses and ship them to you locally for about R 3500 for all the options - photochromic varifocals are what I got - they work great and are as cheap as chips. You can of course get cheaper than this - I have heard of as low as R 500.

I found the site by accident when my sister in law was looking for cheap glasses. All you need is a script which you upload, then you go and choose a frame Even can do a virtual try on etc) - and then you order. It takes about 3 weeks and eventually will arrive - mine had some duty on them as well as they were about R 3k.

I have since this orders about 6 sets of glasses from them (after my perscription changed) and am currenty wearing a set i use evey day. I also have perscription sunglasses from them.

With prices being so crazy for the fancy options you get these are affordable and if you have a chnage in script you just order another set or some lenses 🙂

I'm using the D'Arcs Peak and Vantage II with the optical insert fram. The insert is cheap but the trifocal lens from the optometrist were nearly R5k. So not cheap but they work for me. I've tried the soft contacts but getting them into my eyes is a real problem. Also if i get sweat into my eye the slat in the sweet irritates my eye ball and I have to remove the contacts :(

That's the one thing I also had an issue with: getting the contacts onto my eyeball.

I didn't think about the sweat part, is that a common problem do you think for people.
