OK, I have just got me a nice XT tubeless wheelset, but I am running them with tubes for now, so do I need rimtape?  There are no spoke holes or any other items that could damage the tube, so is rimtape advisable/necessary?

not sure - i would say use rim tape to be sure - more often than not the cause of my punctures is the shifting of the rim tape from tyre torque - water seepage and the subsequent exposure to rough / uneven rim surface (spoke nipples incl)

Check where the rim is joint' date=' if there is no rough parts, dont use tape.[/quote']

As smooth and slippery as a politicians shoulders!  It almost feels like it's teflon covered, so I will give the rimtape a skip and carry a spare tube just in case...

I dont use rimtape on my Ksyriums....Unhappy

Then why are you sad about it?

On the helpful side: my mavic rim has a small crate where the rim is joined. when I rode it with a tube in the begining I just put some insulation tape over it.

Thanks for the answers guys, it looks like I'll be able to sleep again tonight knowing my ride will be smooth and safe without rimtape!

You do not need any rim tape.

Highly recommend to use them tubeless though. Waste not to.

Absolutely, but I will get a set of tubeless with Stan's as soon as I can figure out which tyres to run!  Still need to sleep about it for a week or two and see what the rain will do to my favourite singletrack this autumn...

just go to your LBS and ask them what they recommend. The people in the area will always know.

Don't want to sound too cynical but at some bike shops that is relative to what's in stock on the day ....... Confused
