Cape Town danger areas

I didn't get the impression anyone was suggesting roaming the streets looking for people you don't like the look of . . .

i'm up for going through that Woodstock cycle lane at night a few times in a group and luring out an altercation and beating the **** out off anything and everything that doesn't say City of Cape town on it.

‘ Luring out ‘implies ill get attacked by someone wanting to steal a bike I’m riding as bait ( have you ever been trough there?) I thought it was pretty obvious. Anyway...

Cape Town needs to look after itself. Half of its revenue must be from tourists. But with all the infighting that is going on in the DA they probably don't care much. I hope Aunty Helen gets her big stick out and starts hitting people immediately.

Im just quoting the above because it touched on the subject , not singling it out ;-)

- The DA literally just spectacularly imploded....i guess we need to enjoy the last days of ‘independence’ and our semi functioning cycle lanes in the western cape lol....because they wont be a priority any time soon.

I have read the odd post on this thread over the last couple of days, and I have come to the conclusion that this thread is about a lot of hot air and the odd wannabe Batman.

People must get to grips with reality, and leave the la-la land mentality behind of "I'm gonna get 'em"...You know you're not, we all know you're not. Quit pretending. Live responsibly. And rather than moaning from the luxury of a keyboard, instead go hassle your local councilor to get the SAPS / Law Enforcement to do their job. If all the folks who come on here all gung-ho to bring vigilantism to the fore "because in their moral universe, they deem it just" would rather do something constructive like petitioning for safer cycling, then perhaps that will bear realistic fruit in the long run.

Regtig mense. regtig?

keyboard warrior'ing, hot air and pretence. sure...but right back at you then? quit pretending to know everybody and their story I say.

"everybody is fighting a demon you have no clue about.."

Alot of the hot air...aired in this thread is from genuine aggravated disgust about the situation. Sure sometimes anger gets the better of some of us (me included) and we post on a whim....   but also pretending that it is as simple as telling die oom at Woodstock police station or your local DA scumbag will fix the the problem is also living in LA-LA-land. been there...done that. got told togo somewhere else.

They have bigger fish to fry than some privileged lower-middle class white guy's overpriced bicycle being stolen. in my opinion they have just accepted that the cycle route is a colossal failure and bandaid it to please the complaints every once in a while. they wont fix it....especially not now.

And thus since it is a pre-gone conclusion that since the cycle lanes won't be fixed, it's okay to make comment of vigilantism? Go take a drive through the gang infested parts of Cape Town, and ask the locals how that is working for them. Ask the folks doing the "policing", ask the aunty who has buried all her kids. Ask the gangsters themselves.

It's understandable to be angry. I too am angry. But really, what is threatening to take the law into your own hands going to achieve, other than you intimately getting to know Pappa, at best, or buried, at worst?

Also, you know what I meant with "we all know you aren't really going to follow through". If you had half a brain cell, you would understand the rhetorical nature of that statement. It should not require clarification.

It's sentiment such as this that leads to people thinking it's okay to act out of some self perceived sense of justice. I would just like to know, based on what level of justice will you be serving society? What law will you be enforcing? What law will you be breaking to achieve your so-called moral perspective? Are you okay with being labelled a criminal yourself? And will you be carrying a gun. or a knife? When assaulting anything that does not have City of Cape town on it, does that include me?

Do you see where this futile argument is going? I can. (it's nowhere).

A while ago there was an attempted jacking near the Lower Church St bridge and the guys living next to the bridge actually helped to get the bike back.

On another occasion  a rider was robbed of  his cell phone  under the N1 underpass and it turned out to be perps from Athlone who had a car waiting on top of the bridge. The I phone was traced to Athlone

I suspect that the trouble is caused by chancers moving through the area.

Before being to brave and trying to take the bad guy/s on ,consider that they will most probably have a knife or a gun and will not hesitate to use it and they will have experience in the art

Consider your route and stay alert

Be safe out there

It's all good and well thinking you're going to bliksem these guys into oblivion if they try it with you but the reality is often far different. Even Daniel, who's an ex-springbok mma fighter was forced to sacrifice his bike when confronted by an oke with a panga and high on tik. The intimidation factor is huge and the element of surprise very seldom in your favour. I'm all for fighting back but I'm not prepared for my kids to grow up without a father just for the sake of keeping my bike.

I'm also seriously pissed off with the fact that the sport I've loved for years and which has been my "escape from reality" is now compromised by thieves and murderers. I can no longer just go out for a chilled ride without thinking about exactly which road I need to take to keep safe and even while out there, I need to be constantly vigilant about characters loitering on the side of the road because you never know what their intentions are. Sadly, we are slowly but surely becoming prisoners in our own country.

Friendly disclaimer to fellow forumers :

I will 100% guaranteed for sure lose my **** about this topic again in the future and probably step on toes in the process - AGAIN.

But if no one ever stepped on your toes...you wouldn't know they were there.

it's fine in my opinion...it shows I care enough to lose my **** about it in the first place. I could have been nonchalant or ignorant about instead - even worse.

Now wheres that poem that got referenced earlier...

if i scratch where it doesn't itch for you...i'm sorry in advance. Ignore me and read the next post.

All I can hope for is that if I keep scratching...i'll eventually hit the right spot :P

I aim to please

You're welcome to lose your ****, just don't lose your life. You're angry, I'm angry, most of us are angry but until we come up with viable solutions, it's just going to continue down this slippery slope. We're the privileged minority and a drop in the ocean compared to all the other chaos happening in this country. Just take care of yourself as best as you can out there

Reading this thread and other things in gaps in my day I found myself thinking about a world in which someone might say the words below and mean them. It's the opening of a speech made by an American socialist just after WW1 and just before he was sent to prison for organising a strike of railway workers.

Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.

  • 1 month later...

So this morning, Just before 6 myself and 2 mates, were cycling direction Camps Bay, we were joined by a few guys riding with the John O'Connor group, as we were heading down Victoria Road through Bantry Bay (Location circled) we had a very very close call with what I'm assuming was an Uber driver in a Gold Toyota Corolla(lady sitting in the back seat). The bend in discussion is a blind corner heading toward Camps Bay, I was infront of the group of +- 6 guys and as I approached the corner(thankfully we were all in single file and not going at a high speed as we had slowed down to wait on another guy) a MyCiti bus came around the bend which I saw but what I never saw was this complete and utter BOX overtake the bus, on the blind corner(solid line aswell), fortunately I managed to move a little bit more left into the gutter, Even the okes walking on the opposite side walk actually shouted at him as he overtook the bus which I think is what may have alerted the other guys behind me. As this driver passes us, who are swerving to literally stay alive, He just gives a big fat smile and continues on his merry way. We were very fortunate this morning, of a car was behind us there would have been a very messy accident aswell because there was no way he was stopping or a car was stopping in time.

Be very careful and alert on the roads of you ride early mornings guys, Some drivers literally do not care...

Glad you came out unscathed. That is a hairy bend with just about zero runoff for a cyclist in this event. Some folks just don't give a rat's arse about other people. Be safe out there people now that we also have the rest of SA to contend with here in esCape Town.
