I often ride the spruit from emmarentia through to republic road around mid morning sometimes mid afternoon and have never felt threatened. I have heard a couple guys in the reads along the spruit a couple of times but again never felt threatened. Maybe I am just being totally naive

Hi guys.

Three accused (26, 28 and 38) charged with the rape of a 26 year old cyclist were denied bail in the Kempton Park regional court today.

These are the guys who held up the brother and sister who were out riding their bikes near the Benoni offramp on the R21 highway to Pta.

They tied them up and later raped the sister. A week later, with the help of eBlockwatch and Andre, they were arrested.

No info was given about num 1, (he did not apply for bail) but 2 and 3 are serious jailbirds.

Num 2 has been convicted 10 (ten) times since 1993, num 3 about 8 times.

The case has been postponed to 18 July awaiting DNA results. All 3 have made confessions and pointed out the crime scene so the case looks good. It will be heard in the highcourt. Gang rape carries a life (25 years) sentence. "Normal" rape is 15.

The 10 cases of theft/robberies in the kempton area, where cyclists were robbed of their bikes do not look so rosy. None of the suspects were ID at the ID parade, so they can only be charged with being in possession of stolen goods. (and a bike, even worth thousands, is not high on our magistrates list as worst evils).

They are being charged in the Tembisa regional courts.

Moral of the story, if you get robbed, try (easily said) and get as much info of the robber, as possible. Afterwards keep in touch with the investigating officer (easier said than done).

If they could have ID' the robbers, a case of organized crime could have been build, going from Tembisa (Kempton) all the way back to Mozambique. That would have meant a sentence of 10/15 years, now we are looking at a slap on the wrist.

The Randburg Sun has had a few articles asking us to avoid Kya Sands on the way to Northern Farms, It seems that a number of bike jackings have happened here.

ya, heard of a bike jacking on the road from top of cedar to northerns (heronbridge area), as well as Spruit near scout hall and river crossing just after william nicol.

Not common. Was a couple of opportunistic attacks behind the pick and pay and below william nicol bridge. They recently caught the guy and gone quiet since.

When you leave alberts farm there is a road which takes you out behind a BP garage, just follow that road all the way up. You cross over 5th avenue in albertville down twist street and then all the way up and over main street. There is a dry cleaners and a cafe, you keep going up the hill its still twist street till you get to the end. Then turn right and left into end street, you will see the entrance there. Just follow the trail up towards the left, you will be above the cemetary and you will come out on beyers.

I wouldnt ride this in summer because the grass is very long and it can be a bit of a pain and also gives people opportunities to hide and then attack. Now is the best time to go, If you go early morning you will be fine, sundays are also good anytime of the day.

If you are aware of your surroundings you will be fine, theres no planned attacks there as the traffic is rather low.

10/15 years? Read yesterday some chick got 15 years for fraud in a casino. Really effud up when you get a bigger sentence for fraud than rape!

There was a similar story where a murderer got off on a 1 year sentence while on the same day another person got 5 for not paying a tv license or something silly like that. (Can't remember the exact details) the moral was: when the tv license inspector comes, kill him rather. You'll get a lighter sentence.

My sister and I were cycling at The Cradle Saturday morning, we were on the section of road that goes past The Cradle Restaurant, Teak Place and eventually the Lion Park, cycling in the direction of the Lion Park. We were just nearing the top of a climb when we spotted two unsavory characters - one was carrying a panga, they were looking directly at us.....fortunately for us a group of 10-15 cyclists appeared on the opposite side of the road. The two unsavory characters looked from us to the group and back again....we put our heads down and rode as fast as we could giving them a wide berth and fortunately hit a downhill and sped down the hill, half way down we phoned a friend to call the cops and warned all cyclists we saw going in that direction. Apparently the area patrol car was called, but we did not see any cops on the route. On arriving back at Something Country I was told there had been 2 bike jackings outside Toadburry Hall on Saturday morning.

So I ride the cradle weekend mornings at 06:00 leaving from Fourways down Cedar to Rhino and Lion park then to Clearwaters and back along NorthHumberland. Alot of my cycling mates tell me I am crazy and that it is so dangerous. I have been doing this for the last year. I have checked for incidents on the Hub but there doesn't seem to be much.... Am I crazy to ride alone? Have I just been lucky?

I know this was a long time ago but do you still ride this route and how does it compare to the attached? Would the attached be safe for weekdays riding alone?

Hijacked on Tuesday (27/05) morning at 05:30 on Juno Street (

the steep climb behind Darras center in Kennsington).

Both assaultants were armed. Walked into the road and cocked the pistol in my face. Dumped the bike and made a run for it. They caught me and took my phone and money.

This route is used by many cyclists for hill training.

Alive but battered and bruised

Anyone had any incidents in or around Alberts Farm or Emmarentia?

Yes, there have been a couple, specifically in the single track section in Emmarentia. Know a couple of people were held up at knifepoint and bikes taken. Has been quiet for a few months now though, touch wood.
