Why you are not welcome in the cradle

Cradleresident

Recommended Posts

This is like most coastal towns I know. They hate not dislike but hate the traffic we create with our vehicles in December BUT then this seems to be the very same lifeline that keeps them alive for the next 11 months.

Do not know the CRADLE route but pretty sure there must be some kind of spinn off for them???

It truly starts with yourself and what example you set for the kids in the car or on the bike or wherever since they will be the drivers in a couple of years time.

We are seeing the same thing in SBR and thus they are currently thinking about closing to cyclists.

Sad that it takes but 2 or 3 confused people to completely ruin it for all.

Finally' date=' you did mention a bicycle lane - I don't see any in the pics.  I never brought that into my initial point as I referred directly to "riding within the yellow line".  There did used to be reference to cycle lanes in one of the guideline docs from the department of Transport a few years ago, but I don't recall it making legislation.  In the UK bicycle lanes are compulsory in terms of their code of conduct, but recent case law has seen that section being removed from the highway code.  The primary reason is that a cyclist should have a choice to ride wherever on the road he feels safest.[/quote']

linnega you are forcing the shoe onto the other foot here, the issue is cyclists behaviour, NOT cage driver behaviour... Irrespective how any of us feel about cage drivers, this thread is about cyclists behaviour.

From http://www.acts.co.za/rt_nrta/regs_311_riding_on_pedal_cycles.htm

National Road Traffic Act, 1996

National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999

Chapter X : Rules of the road and matters relating thereto

Part I : Rules of the road

311. Riding on pedal cycles

1)        No person shall ride a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is seated astride on the saddle of such pedal cycle.

2)        Persons

riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except

in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more

persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the

same time.

3)        No person riding or seated on a pedal cycle on a public road shall take hold of any other vehicle in motion.

4)        No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side.

5)        No

person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any

person, animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which

prevents him or her from exercising complete control over the movements

of such pedal cycle.

6)        A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand on the handle-bars of such pedal cycle.

7)        Whenever

a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding

pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion

of such road.

8)        A

person riding a pedal cycle on a public road or a portion of a public

road set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, shall do so in

such manner that all the wheels of such pedal cycle are in contact with

the surface of the road at all times.

I am not sure where exactly this picture was taken, but the section of road from Beyers Naude to the second traffic circle (close to the rhino and lion park) definitely has cycling lane signs, and the dotted yellow line as shown on this photo...

I appreciate Linnega's point. Cyclists have the right to the road. If there is no cycling lane, we cyclist do not have to leep as far left as possible - although maniac drivers in SA force us there. According to the law, cycling in a yellow lane is technically illegal.

Just so everybody is in the clear, the dashed yellow lane in some of the pics is a cycling lane, yes?

Some quirks re the rules above:

(1.) Could be interpreted as saying riding out of the saddle is illegal.

(4.) Some folks break the law on 2 counts, when going up a steep hill.

(6.) Eish. Taking off wind jammer, or digging for food in pockets with both hands also illegal.

Dont really care about this argument or whether i'm welcome or not in the Cradle - how would I know? There's nobody bringing me milk and home-baked cookies anywhere else I ride to show I'm welcome.

But Christies anomalies are fun.

The one I like to think of is we have to ride single file unless overtaking.  So if you're running a paceline everything is Street Legal & let the bastards wait behind you.

Of course the law's no good without a bit of interpretation & as we're all top-qualified to be the last word in interpretation the debate aint likely to advance very far.

I was on my way to Bakwena race this morning when I got caught up behind a bunch ride in Kempton this morning. Bunch of plus/minus 20 with a Merc blocking the cars behind them. It was on a slight uphill and they could only manage 18km/h. Solid line and cyclist taking up the whole lane and the guy in the Merc looking back in his mirror the whole time I was behind him, but did not make way for the cars piling up behind me. Must have been a club ride from Kempton. Selfish bunch smiley7.gif

Thanks, now I feel better. I train on my own. I do not want to be associated with these arrogant cyclists not abiding by the rules of the road.

Just further evidence that no-one in this country has respect for the law.
Now this is a man I can respect smiley32.gif smiley32.gif

The single most powerful sentence that I believe should actually have the biggest impact.............both ways.

Good one Jules.

I concur that the pics dont tell a good story about some not all cyclists behaviour, i have an issue with the way the header reads. To my knowledge the roads around cradle are public property and i see there is even resurfacing done in pics at tax payers money so to state that cyclists are not welcome is a bit arrogant, something along the lines of not in my neighbourhood. VdbPark hosts more races than any other area, practically every week and you dont see them making such a fuss. Rather than focusing on a specific area a national awareness is required.

"By the way , he was urinating on a drive way about 50 meters from a restaurant. No excuse."

I just seriously hope cradleresident was not implying that he should have been peeing on  the restaurant's driveway!!!Wink

I wish that people would chill out and stop complaining about these little things in life...think about it...there are much more important things to complain about ie.

Eskom, and the increases they want

Tax, and the proposed increase

National medical program

etc

....wrt to urinating...chill man...I have seen LOTS of people doing it, is is it because he is a cyclist?

Next to Taxi ranks, mere meters away from toilets, and you then we all accept it?

What about the people "stealing electricity" do you also actively hunt them down with a camera?

Come on, just chill out, like someone said after the 94.7 things will calm down again...same in Cape Town, just before the Argus things are crasy...in December you can not drive/park even walk in small town like George, Mosselbay, Jeffries...and the residents chill out and accept it for that time

Now everyone is getting their nickers in a knot over something that is tempory....??

Take a chill pill Cradelresident...there are lots of things that iritate many people and they take in their stride....

Just accept it like you accept many other things, Taxis, people throwing rubbish out of their cars, people driving drunk....

If you want to make the world a better place I suggest you all start with things that really matter...

Drunk Drivers(proven to be a KILLER), Murders, homeless(they urinate in public), jobless beggers, drunks....etc

nuff said, my 1 cent

The retarded justification to the actions reported by Cradleresident is the reason why I don't ride road.

I'm not going to be associated with such wankers.

10 Pages and still going strong......

Someone should post a pic of a human body thats been dragged under a car to add some perspective to the argument?

You will always lose against a motorcar, it's a sad reality in the sport we all love so much, hug the pavement, socialise at spin classes!Big%20smile
