What $700' date='00 less?? If they sell a Mercks for $ 4800,00 then they should sell this frame at least for $ 7000,00. Dont think its the same class (IMO)[/quote']

Out of interest, why do you say the Merckx frame is in a different class than the Dogma?

As i said this is merely a opinion. For starters the merckx bikes are made buy a guy (or he gets it made) that is one of the best cyclists of all time and now he wants to coin it with his "name". Nothing wrong with that and i wish him all the best. Pinarello has a rich pedigree that goes back yonks and its Italian (basically where the history starts). So i dont say the merckx is not a good bike but in my opinion its not in the same company (pedigree) as the pinarello

Not so fast bud...the new Merckx and the current range of Pinarello's are all made in the same factory in Japan! A company called Toray makes them for the 2 mentioned companies, as well as a company called OPERA! But I dont think that makes them any less special.

Pinarello until recently held the record for the most TDF wins until surpassed by TREK! But even then, thePinarello wins of Delgado, and 2 of Indurains were on French made TVT92's disguised as Pinarello's!

Although Colnago have not won a TDF, they were the choice of Eddy Merckx for his earlier bikes...and taught him all he needed to know about building bikes! And they are genuinely made in Italy.

Only the old style lugged Colnago's are made in Italy, the others are made in Taiwan!  If they were so great, why did Rabobank and the others drop them?  Thay are trying to play catchup with the others.

Nostalgia is great, but paying for it is quesstionable.  It's not the best because it was good yesterday.  That is romantic, but not realistic.  Yes, they are very nice bikes, but seriously not worth the pricetag (Pina or Colnago).  If you want a top end bike you should not pay more than R20k if function is what you want, but I'm guessing that if you are looking at a Pina you are not a realist anyway.

Pianrello's are midlife crisis bikes.

Have you ridden a new Pinarello?

A couple of months ago my LBS had a tryout day and borrowed a very pretty Prince decked out in Chorus all shiney and new and took it for a 100k spin.  It was really nice to ride.  It felt like I expected a top-end bike to ride and I think it is really nice, but I honestly don't think it deserves the price premium.  Yes, it's pretty and desirable, but it has no magic element that makes it a must-have, but hey it's my opinion.

Can you imagine what I would have felt like had I BOUGHT the Prince at tht moment only to be replaced by the Dogma a couple of weeks later?

Ahhh this old chest nut.

Is it worth the money? Hell no. Would you feel pretty sweet perched on top of this baby? Hell yes!

Ultimately very few cyclists will do justice to their bike's ability but we pick what we like, can afford and enjoy anyway. If you want it and can afford it - buy it!

Come on chaps - don't begrudge the dude his loot if he has it...

Just the fact that this thread gets so much response makes the pinarello marketing campain successful. Off course if a reputable bike company puts a new model on the market with some claimed world first structural changes and add a totally unthinkable pricetag, they wil get response and allot of it. Weather it is the new god's gift to bikes or not, if you can afford it you will want it

Saw a guy in Seapoint that just got his bike at that new shop by the Newport coffee shop.

I popped past that shop while in Cape Town last week. If I had the spare R165k lying around, I would have dropped it on the new Cannondale Scalpel team sitting in the shop window. Dual suspension with full SRAM XX, weighing a ridiculous 9kg - truly awesome!

last year, at the argus expo, I made the mistake of taking a Prince off its display stand to get a feel for the bike.  It had not even touched rubber to ground and the stand dude - a tall guy from up country - had taken it out of my hands and placed it back in its stand.  All without stopping a conversation he was having with someone standing there. Think he is from that shop that imports all the premium Italian stuff.  So to prove I could actually afford one if I really wanted one, I bought a pair of Sidi gloves for R250.00. Ha, that will learn him.LOL When I asked him if people actully buy these bikes he asked me if people actully buy ferraris?  I took my overpriced gloves and buggered off.

I hope you mean R2500.00. With all due respect my friend if you bought a R250 pair of gloves and waved that in his face all you showed him is that....yip cant afford that bike

I have one guy who bought 3 dogmas with Super Record, Bora 2 wheels and Shamal Ultras from me. One for each one of his houses. I guess there are some people in a league above when it comes to spending money and all they want is the ultimate bike.

No that is what you call stupid. Why spend that money on 3 of these bikes when you can only ride one at a time. You for selling him 3 should be ashamed. You should have sold him one Dogma and a super sweet HT and a superhot DS.

3 Different bikes= 3 different groups of parts to sell if they break. Money to be made in the long run and not just on one sale.

I know of a guy like that . The type of cash he has he could buy Swaziland as a holiday farm. Why would he wat to lag a bike around with him to his various homes. Just have abike in JHB, Slaapstad and some place in France. You cant take it with you, so spend it while you can.

Onetime...why should he be ashamed of selling him the bikes? If the guy has the cash, and has his mind set on 3 bikes there is nothing wrong with that. It does make sense not lugging the bike around with him when he travels. Good luck to him, and I hope he continues doing well enough to buy another 3 when the new models come around again. I can assure you that no one hesitated selling me my bike when I purchased it, hell I had 3 Pinarello's with Super Record within 4months from Northcliff Cycles...should Alex be ashamed? No! Did it make me faster? maybe a little...but I sure loved every minute I rode them. Lets not begrudge people nice stuff.

AS for Colnago, I'm not getting into that whole "made in Taiwan" argument, because there are some (cheaper range) made there, but the EPS, CX1, CF7 et al are made in Cambiago. Been there, seen the process. As for Rabobank dropping them, it was the other way around. Colnago did not sponsor a Pro Tour team this year, but have returned to sponsor in 2010.

Is it a romantic notion to ride a prized Italian 'Boutique" bike? Maybe, but who cares? If you want to ride a Pinarello Dogma with all the fancy trimmings then good for you.
